Kids Alive Fest Children's Village of Washington County holds its open house and community safety day. Activities include: helicopter landing, 11 a.m., weather and emergency calls permitting; K-9 demonstration, noon; auto extrication demo, 1 p.m.; Ronald McDonald safety show, 2 p.m. Representatives from area organizations will participate with safety-related displays and activities. Tours of the Power of Fire House. Mini-car rides and fire hose spraying challenge with purchased tickets.

Every year, organizers of the 2012 Franklin-Fulton County Chorus Festival manage to overcome tough challenges to host a crowd-pleasing performance. Saturday's performance in the auditorium at Chambersburg Area Senior High School was no exception. Nick Metz, a senior at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, has performed in county chorus for three years, and is proud of the end product that results after the initial challenges. “It's very much of a challenge. But somehow, in two days of practice, it comes together,” Metz said.

James Ernest Pantle, formerly of Shepherdstown, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan, 4, 2012, at his home south of Martinsburg. W.Va. Born in Burlington, Kan., he was the son of the late Earl D. Pantle and Helen K. Pantle Clark. Jim graduated from Topeka High School and earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baker University in Baldwin, Kan. He taught both instrumental and choral music for three years in Harveyville, Kan. He then earned a master's degree in music from the University of Oregon, and continued graduate studies for one year in Oldenburg, Germany, at the University of Oregon center for music education.

At 12 years old, Alex DeGrange is already delving into music, enjoying styles from hip hop to rhythm and blues, and studying ways to make his own music. But on Wednesday night, DeGrange was concentrating on another interest: choral music. The Northern Middle School student joined his peers and performed before hundreds of people in the annual All County Middle and Senior High Honor Choruses concert at North Hagerstown High School. In what has been a local tradition for more than 36 years, a little more than 300 students in the concert are selected by choral directors at their respective schools, said Rob Hovermale, supervisor of visual and performing arts for Washington County Public Schools.
