Child struck by vehicle in Hagerstown A child was flown by helicopter Saturday night to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Hagerstown, a Washington County emergency services dispatcher said. Emergency crews responded to the first block of West Side Avenue in Hagerstown, where the child was struck at 7:56 p.m., the dispatcher said. Further details were unavailable Saturday night. An 8-year-old Williamsport boy was flown to the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after he was shot accidentally, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said. The boy was in stable condition Friday night, according to Deputy 1st Class Carly Hose, who is a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. The incident was reported about 5:50 p.m. from an apartment located in a building on 10707 Brookmeade Circle in Williamsport. Hose said the boy suffered a single gunshot wound to the left thigh from a handgun.

A Fairplay woman accused of breaking the arms and legs of her 8-month-old daughter told investigators the injuries occurred while exercising the infant, a charging document filed with Washington County District Court said. The documents alleged that Stacey Renee Reese, 25, told investigators “I've always been rough, and I don't mean to hurt her.” Reese, of 7821 Sharpsburg Pike, is charged with six counts, including first-degree child abuse resulting in severe physical injury and first-degree assault.

M.  Lorraine Lewis, 84, of 13735 Village Mill Drive, Maugansville, Md., passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011, at her home. Born Friday, Dec. 10, 1926, in Tilghmanton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Luther Pearre Boyer and the late Anna Margaret Smith Boyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert C. Lewis, in 2000. She was employed with the Washington County school lunch program, retiring in 1991. She is survived by three daughters, Belinda J. Weaver and husband, Michael, Lori A. Lewis and Lisa M. Lewis, all of Maugansville; one son, Robert E. Lewis and wife, Patti, of Ellicott City, Md.; two sisters, Thelma Oldham of Smithsburg, Md., and Carol Findley of Hagerstown, Md.; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruby Katherine Miller, 5, of Hamilton Boulevard, Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Born July 19, 2007, in Charleston, W.Va., she was the daughter of Mary Helen Leatherman Miller and Charles D. Miller of Hagerstown. Ruby was a kindergarten student at Ruth Ann Monroe Primary School. In addition to her parents, Ruby is survived by maternal grandparents, Paul and Bonnie Leatherman of Hagerstown; paternal grandmother, Jo R. Miller of Virginia Beach, Va.; godparents, Michael and Amy Hicks of Mercersburg, Pa.; aunt, Katherine Leatherman of Hagerstown; aunt, Tamara, and uncle, Ryan Schubart, of Virginia Beach; aunt, Toni, and uncle, Paul Leatherman II, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; great-aunts, Mary Beard and Patricia Slick of Hagerstown; great-aunt, Jennifer, and great-uncle, Hampton Riggleman, of Laurel, Md.; great-aunt, Jean, and  great-uncle, William F. A 27-year-old man was charged this week with beating a 2-year-old girl who suffered broken ribs and possibly a broken jaw, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Daniel Keith Edmonds, of no fixed address, is charged with first-degree child abuse and first-degree assault, both of which carry maximum sentences of 25 years in prison, according to Washington County District Court records. Edmonds also is charged with second-degree child abuse and second-degree assault, the records said.

A delayed autopsy report prompted a Washington County Circuit Court judge on Tuesday to postpone the trial of a Hagerstown man who is charged in the October 2011 death of a 2-year-old boy. Washington County Circuit Judge M. Kenneth Long set Brian Michael Miller's trial date for Sept. 11. Miller, 33, of 360 Buena Vista Ave., is charged with 16 counts, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Logan Sellers, according to court documents.

Serena Peyton Tasker, age 11, of Hancock, Md., died Monday, March 14, 2011, at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Born Feb. 17, 2000, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of Shawn Alan and Teresa Lynn Hines Tasker of Hancock. Serena was a fifth-grade student at Hancock Elementary School, where she was a member of the Raiders Cheerleaders. She was a member of the Tri State Tigers Competition Cheerleading Team. She volunteered for Loaves and Fishes Thrift Store in Hancock.

A 5-year-old Hagerstown boy who was diagnosed with brain cancer in June 2008 and became the focus of local fundraisers died Tuesday at Meritus Medical Center. Corey Matthew Kitchen, who was under the care of the Hospice of Washington County, had malignant brain tumors in 2008, according to The Herald-Mail’s archives. The tumors were detected at Washington County Hospital, now Meritus Medical Center, and Corey was referred to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., his mother, Angelina Kitchen, said Wednesday afternoon.

The Washington County Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to give Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox authority to continue negotiating and to finalize an agreement for Meritus Medical Center Inc. to provide health services in schools starting in August. The estimated cost for the agreement is $2.7 million to $2.8 million, Board Vice President Jacqueline Fischer said in making the motion for the authorization during Tuesday's afternoon board meeting. The agreement with Meritus Medical Center Inc. will be for one year, with a possible one-year extension, Wilcox said.
