Preparing for the birth of a baby is one of the most important steps to take toward becoming a parent. According to Jody Bishop, clinical manager of Washington County Hospital's Family Birthing Center, childbirth education classes provide pregnant women and their families with information regarding pregnancy, labor, delivery, and pain control options. Family participation in these classes is recommended and beneficial. In addition to preparing a pregnant woman for childbirth, prenatal classes include information on newborn care, breastfeeding, infant safety and infant CPR. Most of the classes are offered free or for a minimal fee. Classes are even offered on weeknights and on weekends to accommodate different schedules.

In case you were wondering, the miracle of birth is still a God-blessed miracle. A little more than two weeks ago, my wife Karin and I welcomed our second child, a son, following a Caesarean section birth at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown. Now before you cringe and think that I'm about to bore and gore you to death about goo-goo eyes and childbirth-related details, relax. This is a serious column (Kohler? Serious? Seriously?) about the miracle that happens thousands of times every day across the country.

julieg@herald-mail.com When Courtney Brooke Evans came into the world on May 16 this year, she was a 7-pound, 4.5-ounce, messy, crying bundle with a little dark brown fuzz on her head. Years from now Courtney will be able to see that for herself and not just hear the tale of her mother Mellanie Evans' seven minutes of pushing her into the world at Washington County Hospital. That's because her aunt, Shelley Lesher, captured the moment on videotape. Courtney is Mellanie and Matthew Evans' third child and the third one whose birth is on tape.
