HAGERSTOWN - A Hagerstown man who served 90 days in jail for breaking a dog's leg was in Washington County Circuit Court on Monday for a violation of probation. John Edward Mock Sr., 47, declined a plea offered to him by Washington County Assistant State's Attorney John Dunlap and asked for his case to be continued. Circuit Judge W. Kennedy Boone III continued the case until Sept. 24, because Mock was not represented by counsel but had requested a public defender after he was released from jail at the end of July, Boone said.

A group of Broadfording Christian Academy high school students and adults traveled to Chihuahua, Mexico, in March to minister to the poverty-stricken children there. The BCA mission team paired with Christian Outreach International, a larger missionary group that has been working with the people of Chihuahua for several years. The mission teams prepared and served meals, and held a mini-Vacation Bible School for the children. A school, training center and church are being built to supply more seating so more children in Chihuahua can attend church and be served meals.

Six Chihuahuas seized from an animal hoarding situation and placed with Antietam Humane Society have been adopted, but the Waynesboro shelter still has dozens of other animals in need of homes. Last Thursday night, dog wardens and troopers searched a property in northeastern Pennsylvania. They allegedly discovered 185 Chihuahuas and the corpses of 30 more in a freezer. Mike Pechart, who oversees dog law enforcement activities at the state Department of Agriculture, called it “one of the worst cases of animal hoarding we've seen in Pennsylvania.” By the end of the day Friday, all of the dogs had been placed in animal shelters around the state.

On Oct. 3, the Regal Valley Mall Stadium 16 is giving away a free movie poster or other movie items from the newest Disney film, "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," to anyone donating items to the collecting donations for the Humane Society of Washington County. A collection box for the shelter will be set up in the lobby of the cinema in celebration of the movie. Movie viewers can bring a pet-related item to the theater, place it into the donation box and they will be given one of the gifts from "Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
