World War II veteran and best-selling author of “Hell's Guest,” Col. Glenn Frazier, 89, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club meeting at The Orchards Restaurant. He shared his experiences of fighting a losing effort to save the Philippine Island of Luzon from the Japanese to the infamous six-day Bataan Death March and three years of torture in Japanese prisoner of war camps.

SHARPSBURG ? Antietam Women's Ensemble plans to bring civilian music of the Civil War era and the emancipation movement to life this weekend at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sharpsburg. The group's third concert since its inauguration last year, honors Sharpsburg's Tolson's Chapel, the original Methodist church for black members of the community. "Mainly we wanted to say, 'Hey, look what's here,'" says Georgiann Toole, director of the ensemble. The chapel was constructed in 1866 and, starting in 1868, housed a Freedmen's Bureau school for African-American children.

marlob@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - When Willard and Mary Graves got involved in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Maria Goretti four years ago, they may not have been expecting miracles, but they think they got one nonetheless. "A lady who was writing poetry to Jesus during her visit to the chapel took a picture of the (vessel) that holds the Eucharist and when her film was developed, there were rays of light emanating from it," Willard Graves said. Countless flash pictures have been taken before and after the "miraculous" 2003 photo and nothing even close ever has shown up, he said.
