Heritage Academy will hold its annual alumni chapel at 9 a.m. Wednesday. All Heritage alumni are invited. Any alumni wishing to speak during the chapel session should contact Mr. Miles at the school at 301-582-2600. The annual alumni vs. varsity basketball games will be held Friday, Dec. 29. The women will play at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. All alumni and their families are invited. Both events will take place at Heritage Academy, 12215 Walnut Point west, Hagerstown.

The sun slowly set over the Franklin County 9/11 and Veterans' Memorial Park as prayers were offered up Sunday. A newly raised U.S. Navy flag rustled in a light breeze as about 100 people witnessed a rifle salute from Charles F. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599. The ceremony at the memorial, which is being developed adjacent to Letterkenny Chapel, capped off the annual Veterans Day service sponsored by the United Churches of the Chambersburg Area and the Joint Veterans' Council of Chambersburg.

The service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the chapel at Quincy Home. Chaplain Baer will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy. Former Pennsylvania Gov. Mark S. Schweiker will speak Saturday during a ceremony to dedicate a Sept. 11 memorial at Letterkenny Army Depot. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will begin at 3 p.m. adjacent to the Letterkenny Chapel at 2171 Carbaugh Ave. Three steel artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center were fashioned into a sculpture that will serve as a permanent memorial to the thousands who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The sculpture first was unveiled to the public at a memorial service in downtown Chambersburg last September.

The West End Baptist Chapel, 101 Buena Vista Ave. in Hagerstown, has scheduled an Easter cantata on Easter Sunday, April 8 at 11 a. m. The name of the cantata is “The Offer Still Stands.” It will be a musical featuring the life of Jesus. All are welcome. Admission is free. March star athletes of the month named Winter Street Elementary School recently announced the March star athletes of the month for pre-kindergarten through grade five. This month's winners are Tianna Russ, Chris Moon, B.J. Jameson, Chloe Whittington, Mason Patterson, Elijah Blakney and Domanick Trimmer.

The United Churches of the Chambersburg Area will sponsor this year's Christmas Eve service at the Letterkenny Chapel, 2171 Carbaugh Ave., on Saturday at 6 p.m. The service will be patterned after the traditional Christmas Eve services held from 1960 to 1995 when the Chapel served its congregation as a military chapel. This year's speaker will be the Rev. Ray L. Kauffman, former chaplain of Franklin County (Pa.) Jail and the Fruitbelt Farmworkers Ministry. The Rev. Dr. William Harter will assist as liturgist.

APRIL 19, 1956-MARCH 14, 2011 Robert J. "B.J. " Tippitt, 54, of Hagerstown, Md., died Monday, March 14, 2011, at his residence. He was born April 19, 1956, in Fairbanks, Alaska, a son of the late James E. Tippitt and Neen (Faust) Tippitt, who survives, of Bedford, Pa. He worked as a printer for Arnold Graphics Printing and J.D. Sky Corp. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson. A memorial service will be Friday, March 18, 2011, at 11 a.m., in the chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford with the Rev. William Foy officiating.
