Chambersburg Mall was packed with people Thursday, but they weren't shopping for bargains - they were shopping for jobs. Even before the second annual Here to Help Job Fair opened at 9 a.m., hundreds of job seekers flooded into the mall in search of employment. “Jobs are something that excite me. Economic opportunity for people is what drives me,” said state Sen. Richard Alloway, R-Franklin/Adams/York, who hosted the event “Hearing all the stories about people who are struggling to make ends meet really breaks my heart,” he said.

SCOTLAND, PA. - By the time medical personnel reached the "victims" at a mock terrorism exercise Sunday, most of them had abandoned coughing and unconsciousness to go in search of a bathroom. Made aware that they were needed, the female victims jogged back to the J.C. Penney wing of the Chambersburg Mall and collapsed to the floor. There, two by two, they were loaded onto stretchers and taken outside to the showers in a mobile decontamination unit. The volunteer victims' roles were woven into an exercise that Susan Dutko, of Franklin County Emergency Services, said was designed to "make us all better on something we hopefully never have to do. " Taking clues from chaotic incidents like the Nickel Mines, Pa., Amish school shooting, Dutko joined with mall and county emergency personnel to draft a drill that would test responses and communication.

TRI-STATE chambersburg@herald-mail.com charlestown@herald-mail.com Bargain hunters on the trail of deep discounts stalked the concourses and aisles of malls, shopping centers and big-box retailers Monday, giving a boost to the bottom lines of area businesses holding sales the day after Christmas. "We've made Chambersburg green," said the appropriately-named Shirley Noel of Lanham, Md., who was with a posse of 10 shoppers at Chambersburg Mall, including relatives Bonnie Diehl, Martha Minor and Nancy Garman of Shippensburg, Pa. "We just brought our Christmas money and said, 'Bargains, here we come,'" said sister Nicki Noel, also of Lanham.

Alan Arnold of Shippensburg, Pa., took a few moments to check out the men’s shoe selection at the Shoe Department inside the Chambersburg Mall on Sunday afternoon. After a trip to Kohl’s earlier in the day, Arnold came to the mall with his wife, Lori, and 17-year-old daughter, Bryce, who was hoping to buy a pair of shoes. “She got some money for Christmas,” Arnold said of his daughter. “It burns a hole (in her pocket).” The Arnolds were like many people who decided to check out the stores Sunday for day-after-Christmas price slashes and holiday clearance sales.
