East Antietam Street at South Potomac Street in Hagerstown was closed to traffic Thursday as workers took down the exterior walls of the Washington County Free Library's Central Library in downtown Hagerstown. The demolition work is part of a $23.8 million project to renovate and expand the library. The library building at 100 S. Potomac St. closed Nov. 9, 2010, and two temporary branches opened about a week later. The $23.8 million project will nearly double the size of the central library to 84,758 square feet, officials have said.

The children's department at Washington County Free Library will sponsor an open house Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the central library in Hagerstown. The children's library staff will be on hand to introduce students and parents to the library's Web site, databases and new resources that will be showcased in the children's area. Mr. Jeff will present a special story time to celebrate the new school year.

Local business leader Teresa Spruill, owner of Spruill Money Management and Organization Services, will lead a workshop on how to "Gain Control of Your Finances by Using a Budget" Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 12:15 p.m. at the Central Library at 100 S. In celebration of Children's Book Week, May 11 to 17, Washington County Library is sponsoring its third annual Create an Easy Picture Book Contest. Beginning as well as experienced authors are invited to write and illustrate a children's picture book. The contest includes five age divisions. There will be one winner for each age division. The age divisions are as follows: Children in grades two to three; grades four to five; grades six to eight; grades 9 to 12; and adult. Only one entry per person will be accepted.
