Baseball The broken-down details of how many batting averages dropped in the past week would be rather extensive. Many players lost up to 50 points off their average - although it does not appear that many earned run averages have gone down. One player who has been bucking the latest hitting trends is North Hagerstown junior Andrew Yacyk. Maybe it was the bumps and bruises sustained during the basketball season that kept Yacyk from getting started quickly.

Clad in matching orange headbands and stickers baring the initials “M.A.,” Smithburg's track team competed in honor of fallen teammate Mitchell Akers in Saturday's Charas Heurich Invitational. Akers, who would have competed in the long jump, passed away Wednesday from injuries he suffered while working at Municipal Stadium. “To say this was just another meet would be a gross misstatement,” said Leopards coach T.J. Hood. “Our whole team felt that this was a nice way to honor Mitchell's memory.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012 PREP BASEBALL A batch of wet stuff came at the wrong time for North Hagerstown - and the right time for Brunswick. As the top of the fifth inning began, a heavy rain, including some hail, descended on North, with the Hubs holding a 5-0 lead in a key MVAL Antietam Conference game on Wednesday. It was heavy enough to make the grounds unplayable, and the game will be continued with one out in the top of the fifth inning when the teams play at Brunswick on May 2. The date is the scheduled regular-season final day for Antietam play.

Living by the “practice makes perfect” theory, the Williamsport Wildcats spent extra time working shooting since their last game on Feb. 17. It was a game where the Wildcats scored only 35 points, including senior Alex Aleshire's noticeable “0” in the scorebook. That wasn't happening on Friday night in the first round of the Maryland Class 2A West Region as Aleshire and his teammates scorched Catoctin 73-47. Aleshire came out full throttle and coach Scott Mowbray couldn't have been happier with the execution of the offense.
