WILLIAMSPORT -- The Williamsport girls basketball team hit more field goals in the first five minutes of the game than it did in the final 24. That was the recipe for a 50-39 MVAL Antietam loss to Catoctin on Friday as the Wildcats managed just four field goals in the final three quarters. The Cougars' win avenges a four-point loss to Williamsport earlier in the season. "We're just not a very good shooting team," said Williamsport coach Chris Malott. "This isn't new. We've even designed plays to put them in position to shoot layups.

By JACK HILL III Staff Correspondent WILLIAMSPORT - Defense was the name of the game Tuesday night as Williamsport shut down Catoctin, 44-20, in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League girls' basketball game. "We certainly needed a big victory," said Williamsport coach Curtis Graff, whose team snapped a two-game losing streak. "Our kids played nice on defense, especially Erin Gross and Melissa Barrett. If you limit a team to eight points at halftime, then your defense has done an excellent job. " Williamsport's defense held Catoctin to just four points in each quarter, except the third.

Junior point guard David Miner notched a triple-double, scoring 31 points with 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lead South Hagerstown to a runaway 81-49 victory over Catoctin. "David Miner is the electric man," South Hagerstown coach Bob Starkey said. "He is high voltage and he shocks you. " Miner followed the pre-game advice that Starkey gave to his team. "The coach just gave us a little pep talk in the beginning," Miner said. "He said, 'Don't come out with your heads too high.

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Had Middletown's girls basketball team finished the way it started, things could have been very different. But the third-ranked Knights shrugged off the slow start and cruised to a 55-35 Monocacy Valley Athletic League victory over an overmatched Catoctin team Tuesday night. Middletown used a 13-4 run to start the second period, after closing the first eight minutes with just a two-point edge despite forcing eight turnovers with its trapping pressure defense.

andrewm@herald-mail.com SEVERN, Md. - The final play of Catoctin's 4-2 nine-inning loss to Rising Sun in the Maryland Class 1A state softball semifinals at Randazzo Softball Park seemed to leave a worst taste in the Cougars' mouths than the final score. With Catoctin trailing 4-2 with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Shawna Wilkes grounded to Tigers second baseman Nikki Karashin. The ball arrived to Karashin about the same time Sara Wastler, who was running to second, leveled her to the ground.

Maybe it was playing football on a different night that threw North Hagerstown off kilter. The Hubs took some time to get into the flow of Thursday's game against Catoctin on Homecoming night, but when they did, it was a powerful swing of momentum that boosted North to a 48-6 victory. It also gave coach Dan Cunningham a school-record 70th victory, surpassing Glenn Cross. “I'm just happy they've kept me around this long,” said Cunningham, who is now 70-53 since taking over in 2001.

GIRLS BASKETBALL In recent years, Boonsboro has played Catoctin tough, even in the years that the Cougars were a very, very good 1A team, not to say they aren't creditable this season. A matchup loomed Friday night between two potential MVAL Antietam Conference unbeatens - South Hagerstown and Catoctin - until the Warriors gladly ruined that. Boonsboro rallied from a seven-point deficit after three quarters to hand Catoctin (6-3, 3-1 Antietam) its first loss while improving to 2-1 in the Antietam and 4-3 overall.

By JACK HILL III Staff Correspondent WILLIAMSPORT - Catoctin scored early and often on Monday building a five-run lead en route to an 8-2 win over Williamsport in Monocacy Valley Athletic League action. Junior centerfielder Justus Yocum, who bats third in the lineup, reached base all four times for Catoctin with three singles and one walk and had three RBI. "That helped us out," Yocum said. "Whenever we score early, the pitching is a lot better. In midseason, we started hitting the ball.

The North Hagerstown boys' basketball team barely avoided an upset on Tuesday by using a comeback effort to squeeze out a 68-62 win over Catoctin. "Honestly, I give Catoctin credit," North Hagerstown coach Kevin Hartman said. "They played well. They took it to us. They got easy baskets, easy layups and 3-point shots. They shot the ball well. We struggled all game. Fortunately, our seniors stepped up and finished the game for us. " Catoctin (2-9) led North Hagerstown (7-5) for most of the way in a fast-paced game.
