THURMONT -- The 81-year-old hiker who had been missing in Catoctin Mountain Park since Monday was found alive early Wednesday, park officials said. Barbara Freund was found at about 12:15 a.m. and was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for a wellness check, Catoctin Mountin Park superintendent Mel Poole said. The search for Freund was one of the most extensive searches in the history of the state of Maryland, Poole said.

Due to increased security measures, portions of Catoctin Mountain Park will be closed effective Friday at about 11:45 a.m. Closures are scheduled to continue through Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. Park Central Road is closed between the Camp Misty Mount Entrance and Camp Greentop. The routes to Blue Ridge Summit Overlook and Hog Rock are not available during the closure. Please direct questions about these closures to Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center at 301-663-9388.

THURMONT, Md. - Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park will hold the 2010 Joint Junior Ranger Camp in June. The two separate two-day sessions will be held for ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 11. Each session consists of a three-hour day led by National Park Rangers in Catoctin Mountain Park and a second three-hour day with state park naturalists at Cunningham Falls State Park. The first session for 9 to 11-year-olds will be June 15 and 19. The first session for 6 to 8-year-olds will be June 20 and 22. The program will be from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Participants are encouraged to attend both days.

Due to increased security measures, portions of Catoctin Mountain Park will be closed from approximately 2 p.m. Friday until approximately noon on Monday, according to the National Park Service. Park Central Road is closed between the Camp Misty Mount entrance and Camp Greentop. Reservations for Poplar Grove, Camp Misty Mount, Camp Greentop, and Camp Round Meadow will be honored. The routes to Blue Ridge Summit Overlook and Hog Rock are not available during this closure. Hikers may access trails to Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rock, and Chimney Rock as well as the Falls Nature Trail from the Visitor Center Trailheads.
