GOLF Williford takes first WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Josh Williford, of Walkersville High School, took first-place honors in the 16-18 division with a 2-over-par 74 to win the Glade Valley Golf Club Junior Golf Championship. Derrick Thompson, of Catoctin High School, was second with a 77 followed by St. John's at Prospect Hall's Mark Hammond with a 78. Patrick McCay, of Walkersville, won the 13-15 division with an 85. Schultz crew misses MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Dirk Schultz's Black Rock Golf Club Buick Scramble team finished second in the Middle Atlantic sectional tournament at Maryland National, failing to qualify for the nationals despite a 16-under-par 56, one shot behind the winning team from Dunkirk, Md., in the gross division.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel S. Johnson recently reported for duty at Trident Refit Facility, Kings Bay, Ga. Johnson is a 1988 graduate of Martinsburg High School, Martinsburg, W.Va. Air Force Airman Eric W. Rose , son of Susan Haller of Frederick, Md., and James Rose of Hagerstown, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Rose is a 2002 graduate of Smithsburg High School. Air Force Airman Josh A. Weichert , son of Stan and Lisa Weichert of Middletown, Md., graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

THURMONT, Md. - David Miner didn't sprawl face-first onto the Catoctin High School turf out of sheer exhaustion. It was pure frustration. After almost single-handedly rallying his team from a 21-point second-half deficit to the precipice of victory, the South Hagerstown junior was betrayed by his own completed pass. Miner's 16th completed pass of the game - on an attempted two-point conversion with no time remaining - fell into the arms of junior tackle Tyler Jones, who was ruled an ineligible receiver by the officials.

Welsh-Stambaugh Albert L. and Betty L. Stambaugh of Smithsburg wish to announce the engagement of their son, Kenneth Lawrence Stambaugh, to Debora Ann Welsh, daughter of Jeanne L. and Robert E. Welsh Sr. of Thurmont, Md. Ms. Welsh is a 1990 graduate of Catoctin High School in Thurmont. She is employed by First Nationwide Mortgage Corp. in Frederick, Md., as a property tax specialist. Mr. Stambaugh is a 1987 graduate of Catoctin High School. He is employed as a foreman by Brandenburg Electric in Frederick.

Ray-Bonney Jennifer Angela Bonney and Christopher Hollis Ray were married Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville, Md. The bride is the daughter of Craig William and Katherine Angela Bonney of Walkersville. The bridegroom is the son of Dolores Faxel Ray of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. and the late Verne Monte Ray Jr. The bride is a 1991 graduate of Walkersville High School. She graduated from University of Maryland at College Park with a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering.
