SHARPSBURG scottb@herald-mail.com An Oreo and Kahlua may not be a combination as common as, say, cookies and milk, but animals with those two names grabbed the top spots at the Washington County Ag Expo's cat shows on Sunday. Oreo, the winner from the 4-H division cat show contest, beat Kahlua, the winner from the open class cat show and was named the overall Best in Show. Oreo, a black-and-white, shorthaired domestic cat, is owned by Briana Lee, 13, of Sharpsburg.

tammyb@herald-mail.com You just can't have a good country fair without some livestock, some home-baked goodies, a few tractors, a healthy dose of country music and a little local royalty. The annual Washington County Ag Expo offered all that - and funnel cakes, too - during opening festivities Friday at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center near Sharpsburg. There was a whole lot of judging going on as entries in the home arts and horticulture categories filled tables in one of the ag center's buildings.

For the past several years, we have had too many cats in our house. Then, earlier this month, we added a second one. She was a stray who arrived pregnant and unannounced over the summer, and had four wonderful kittens that were placed in four wonderful homes. Two actually went to sheriff's deputies, so if you get pulled over by a K(itten)-9 unit, you can blame me. But that left the momma, whom we named Geena for reasons that I am absolutely certain must have made sense at the time.

WILLIAMSPORT -- Ruth Ridenour said goodbye Sunday to 31 years of curtain calls and opening nights at Williamsport High School. She'll be leaving as head of the school's drama department and taking a new roll as head theater teacher at the new Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, which is opening in downtown Hagerstown in August. Sunday was the final performance for the school year by Williamsport High's SophistiCats -- and the final time the group will be directed by Ridenour, who broke down in tears during the performance.

LANDOVER, Md. -- It was clear in the very first event that the Williamsport girls were not going to settle for second at the Maryland Class 1A Indoor Track State Championships on Monday. Kaelii Stout, Ashley Goge, Tracey Forsythe and Morgan Keplinger combined to win the 4x800-meter relay for the Wildcats in 10:13.13, storming all the way back from fifth place in the second half of the race. "We weren't going to let anybody keep us from getting our goal," Keplinger said. Twelve events later, Williamsport became the first school in Washington County history to win a state team title in indoor track.

SMITHSBURG - If Washington County is going to get its 11th straight Maryland Class 1A state team title in girls track and field, it will be brought home by Williamsport next weekend. No one else in the county is even close to the Wildcats, who scored 210 points to easily win the West region title Thursday evening. Smithsburg, which won eight straight state titles from 1996 to 2003, was the runner-up with 86.5. Boonsboro, the two-time defending state champ, was third with 72.5. "I don't like to toot my own horn, but we have a little more depth this year," Williamsport coach John Bailey said.
