The Humane Society of Washington County is bracing for kitten season but is experiencing a shortage of adult cat food and supplies due to the continued large intake of adult cats. It is asking the public for its assistance. The shelter is asking for donations of Purina Cat Chow and Kitten Chow and Yesterday's News cat litter. On Saturday, Gordon's Grocery owners John Gordon and his sister, Cynthia Milsap, will host a wine-tasting event with Monument Fine Wines from noon to 6 p.m. Gordon's is at 101 Cypress St. in Hagerstown. The event is a benefit for the Humane Society of Washington County. Donations of food, toys, nonclumping cat litter and other animal-related items will be collected in front of the store. “What better way to spread holiday cheer than to host a benefit for the homeless animals in Washington County,” Gordon said.

It takes a special kind of patience to sit on a bench in a Santa Claus suit for an afternoon as pets climb all over your lap for photographs. An Antietam Humane Society worker filled that role Sunday as the shelter hosted its annual open house. Many people brought the dogs and cats they adopted from the shelter to the open house for a visit. “Our primary purpose is to thank the community for their support,” said Andrea Haugh, executive director of the Antietam Humane Society.

The Men of Ebenezer AME Church, at 26 W. Bethel St. in Hagerstown, will host their next Men's Day fundraiser with a turkey dinner Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. The menu includes turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans, cranberry sauce, roll, iced tea and dessert. The meal costs $10. It will be eat in or takeout.
