Kitten season is still going strong at the Humane Society of Washington County and the supplies of kitten food and litter are dwindling. The shelter is asking for the public to help. The kittens are fed Purina Kitten Chow. The shelter is also in need of nonscoopable cat litter, preferably Yesterday's News. Donations can be brought to the shelter during normal working hours, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Humane Society is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Berkeley County Humane Society will hold its open house Saturday, Dec. 4, at the shelter, 554 Charles Town Road, Martinsburg, from noon to 3 p.m. Come visit the animals, enjoy refreshments and see the kennel improvements. Holiday open house Ten Thousand Villages, 13625 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, will hold a holiday open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. With spring on the way, the Humane Society of Washington County is preparing for litter season.   Supplies are already low and with the expected influx of litters of kittens and puppies, the shelter is asking the community for donations of Pedigree dry dog food and Pedigree dry puppy food, Purina cat and Purina kitten food and  Yesterday's News cat litter, or any nonclumping cat litter. “This has been a very mild winter,” said Paul Miller, executive director of the shelter.  “Because of that, I think we will see an early start to kitten season, which will greatly reduce our already low supplies.”  Anyone wishing to donate supplies is welcome to take them to the shelter at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown.

On Saturday, Gordon's Grocery owners John Gordon and his sister, Cynthia Milsap, will host a wine-tasting event with Monument Fine Wines from noon to 6 p.m.  Gordon's is at 101 Cypress St. in Hagerstown.  The event is a benefit for the Humane Society of Washington County. Donations of food, toys, nonclumping cat litter and other animal-related items will be collected in front of the store. “What better way to spread holiday cheer than to host a benefit for the homeless animals in Washington County,” Gordon said.

It takes a special kind of patience to sit on a bench in a Santa Claus suit for an afternoon as pets climb all over your lap for photographs. An Antietam Humane Society worker filled that role Sunday as the shelter hosted its annual open house. Many people brought the dogs and cats they adopted from the shelter to the open house for a visit. “Our primary purpose is to thank the community for their support,” said Andrea Haugh, executive director of the Antietam Humane Society.

The Men of Ebenezer AME Church, at 26 W. Bethel St. in Hagerstown, will host their next Men's Day fundraiser with a turkey dinner Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. The menu includes turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans, cranberry sauce, roll, iced tea and dessert. The meal costs $10. It will be eat in or takeout.
