The bridges near Jersey City looked small because the rivers and bays were so swollen with water. The neighborhoods of the normally bustling city were eerily quiet because of a night-time curfew. Many residents were running out of their medications. These were the scenes that greeted emergency personnel from Washington County who were sent to New Jersey to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy. Five members of the Community Rescue Service returned to Washington County about noon Friday and were greeted with pizza, cake and hugs from colleagues and family members at their station on Eastern Boulevard.

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. chambersburg@herald-mail.com Family members pulled an 86-year-old Chambersburg woman from her burning home Monday morning, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. "She was 86 years old and led a good life," said Martin J. Carbaugh, the son of Minnie Carbaugh of 248 Burkhart Ave. He said his daughter, Ann Borg, and her husband, George, pulled Carbaugh from the side door of the house while he was trying to enter through the front door.

tammyb@herald-mail.com Last September, Dave and Dana Rice moved their three small boys into their dream home, a two-story classic brick with five bedrooms, a three-bay garage and lots of room for the boys to play. They were so happy with their new surroundings, they said, that they recommended Tilghmanton Estates to three other families who made plans to purchase homes in the subdivision. But since March, life in their new home has turned into a nightmare, they said.

PROVIDENCE, Ky. (AP) -- One miner has died in a coal mine collapse in western Kentucky and another was missing, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell said Thursday after rescuers had to retreat from the underground accident scene. McConnell announced the news on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Thursday. A McConnell spokesman said in an e-mail that the senator was alerted by officials with the mine operator, Alliance Coal Co. Alliance did not return calls from The Associated Press. The miners were reported missing after a roof collapsed late Wednesday.

Amid the charred remains and melted aluminum siding that once was the Glass family home, a decorative Christmas angel stands nearby, untouched by the Christmas morning blaze that claimed the life of Brian Glass. Glass, 48, of 1689 Path Valley Road (Pa. 75), in Franklin County, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene by Franklin County Coroner Jeff Conner. His family is remembering him as their angel in the wake of his death on the holiday he loved. Glass was trapped in the two-story home and died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Conner said in a news release.

GREENCASTLE, PA. chambersburg@herald-mail.com A Greencastle couple known for their work in the community and their 6-year-old grandson were killed Saturday morning when a fire swept through their home, according to police and fire officials. Joe P. Bowser, 58, of 39 E. Franklin St., his wife, Joan M. Bowser, 57, and grandson Elijah J. Virago of Catonsville, Md., were pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 a.m. by Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. All three were found in an upstairs bedroom and had died of carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of smoke inhalation, Conner said Sunday.

The Tri-State area was preparing for what could be days of severe weather as Hurricane Sandy neared the East Coast on Monday. The heavy winds predicted for late morning by the Natrional Weather Service in Sterling, Va., had yet to arrive by early afternoon, but meteorologist Jared Klein said they will get here and when they do, the period of strong winds will last from 12 to 18 hours.

Except for a flat tire, it had been an uneventful trip last July - a drive from Florida to New York to visit relatives. But everything changed when Larry Schrefler's companion began complaining of dizziness. Traveling along Interstate 81 near Hagerstown, her symptoms worsened and the 82-year-old driver decided to pull their recreational vehicle off the highway. As he did so, his friend lost consciousness. Schrefler immediately called 911 and waited for an ambulance that took the couple to Meritus Medical Center.
