The Washington County Farm Bureau is asking the community to participate in Food Check-Out Week. The canned food drive will benefit local food pantries.  During the week of Feb. 17 to 23, there will be two drop-off sites for collection of canned goods.  The first location is Misty Meadow Creamery, 14325 Misty Meadow Road in the Ringgold/Smithsburg area. For every two nonperishable canned goods dropped off, donors will receive one free scoop of ice cream, compliments of the owners of Misty Meadow Creamery.

The 14th annual Winter Street Elementary School canned food drive resulted in contributions of 1,054 canned food items, which will be donated to The Salvation Army to help its effort to feed the hungry in Washington County. Jillian Meredith's first-graders collected 135 cans, the highest total of any class.

Recently, the Smithsburg Middle School student council sponsored a canned-food drive. The group exceeded its goal of 2,500 cans. Five trucks and vans loaded with 2,583 cans were delivered to the Smithsburg Food Bank. BOONSBORO - The Boonsboro High School band's Christmas concert will be Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission costs $2 or a canned food item to be donated to the local food pantry. There will be a silent auction for 15 Longaberger baskets, which will be awarded at the end of the evening. Chapter XIII Championship T-shirts will be on sale, as will license plate frames for $5. One reads "BHS Warrior Band" and one reads "BHS Warrior Band-Chapter XIII Champions.

Students at Greenbriar Elementary School are asking for community support as they continue to collect canned food for people in need. The Harvest for the Hungry "Kids Helping Kids" food drive, which benefits local food banks, continues at the school through Friday. Last year, students at more than 300 schools throughout Maryland collected more than 343,000 pounds of food. This year's goal is 500,000 pounds of food. Organizers ask that donors take nonperishable food items to Greenbriar Elementary.

FREDERICK, Md. - The first Frederick Blues Festival is planned for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Baker Park bandshell. The blues fest supports Heartly House, a Frederick charity assisting victims of domestic violence. Admission is free, but everyone is encouraged to bring a canned food item. Six popular blues bands are scheduled to appear: 2Blue Ensemble, Blue Steele, BG and the Mojo Hands, Automatic Slim and His Band, the Janine Wilson Band and Duffy Kane.

Holiday countdown Have you started your countdown yet to the holidays? Whether or not you choose to, it would seem it is being done for us. Instead of months, we are now at the weeks portion of the wait. Just around the corner is Thanksgiving, and all the wonderful smells and memories it entails. Then begins the mad race to Christmas. Put your seat belts on and brace yourself for a fun-filled and most joyous part of the year! With all the planning and plotting for the upcoming festivities, we must not forget the events that fill our days and keep our community thriving.

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. -- Franklin County rounded out a Tri-State-area trio of home shows this weekend with what organizers called a record turnout. The 26th annual Franklin County Builders Show in Chambersburg always has been a popular event, said Larry Eberly, co-chairman of the show. Eberly estimated about 15,000 people would spent the weekend browsing the products and services of around 250 vendors at the show. Similar shows in Martinsburg, W.Va., two weeks ago and Hagerstown last week drew as many as 40,000 people and 230 vendors.

WILLIAMSPORT - Independence Day events at Byron Memorial Park will get under way at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast that will continue until 10 a.m. The day will end with fireworks. There will be a 5K Run for Freedom at 8:30 a.m. and a 10 a.m. tribute to Otho Holland Williams at Riverview Cemetery. At 11 a.m., an antique car cruise-in will begin. Also at 11 a.m., activities for youngsters will start at the 4-Star Athletic Club, with both events continuing until 3 p.m. Spectrum Top 40 will perform in Pavilion 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Williamsport Food Bank and the Town of Williamsport will be collecting nonperishable food items for the food bank.

Canned food, boxes of grits, and cases of ramen noodles and dish detergent were among the many items ABATE of Maryland motorcyclists dropped off Sunday morning at a downtown Hagerstown food and clothing bank. The motorcyclists' group has been making the donations to ACTS 9 for the holiday season for 19 years. This has been a busy time of year for ACTS 9, an Adventists Caring Through Sharing food and clothing bank, Executive Director Sandy Martin said. Just as Martin has said the past two years, the food and clothing bank continues to receive fewer donations, while more families are asking for help.

Williamsport Food Bank and friends share the bounty To the editor: On July 9, the Williamsport Food Bank and the Mobile Food Bank of Maryland hosted a food giveaway for all Williamsport school district folks. We were given 6,000 pounds of food to give away in two hours. It was an amazing day. It could not have happened though without the support of the Town of Williamsport, Mayor and Council donating the space in Town Hall to us for the food giveaway.

The students at Broadfording Christian Academy recently held a canned-food drive to benefit the Hagerstown Rescue Mission. The food drive was part of the school’s Spirit Week activities.   Students in all grades were encouraged to earn points for their classes by contributing toward the food drive.   Dot Foods Inc. also made a donation toward the food drive to help the school.

Everyone is looking for ways to save money, especially on food. Saving money on food doesn't mean you have to give up good food and good tastes. Saving money means you need to be a little creative. Check prices online. Most major grocery store chains will list their weekly sales online. So find the Web site for your favorite stores and log on before you do your menu planning and food shopping. You can tweak your menus and your shopping list based on what you find on sale. You can also compare prices at several different stores before you leave home.
