PREP CROSS COUNTRY HERSHEY, Pa. - The Chambersburg girls team fell short in its quest for its first PIAA Class AAA state title since 1989. The Trojans finished third Saturday with 194 points. Greater Latrobe won with 117 and Allentown Central Catholic was second with 149. Chambersburg senior Sarah Morrison also finished third individually on the hilly 3.1-mile course in 18:46. Conestoga's Liz Costello won the race by 22 seconds in 18:18. Also for the Trojans, Cecilia Forshee was 67th (20:00)

BOYS LACROSSE North Hagerstown exploded for the first-ever varsity win in the program's history, getting four goals and an assist from Luke Mongrain and a rare goal from defenseman Matt Strine to defeat Randallstown 15-2 Tuesday afternoon. Chris Michael had two goals and two assists, and Tommy Hardinge and Jacob Feight had two goals each for the Hubs (1-3). John Prather added eight saves for North. JV GIRLS LACROSSE Smithsburg 9, South 7: Christine Best had four goals, Emily Swain added two goals and Laura Spessard, Sara Sanders and Amanda Tedrick all scored once for the Leopards.

Calvary vs. cavalry To the editor: I know that both our President and a past President always get these words mixed up, but to see it in print is really upsetting. In Linda Knapp's column on computers this past Sunday, she said "Call in the calvary". When will people get it straight that Calvary has nothing to do with horses or the military. The word that they mean is "cavalry". They can read their Bible if they want reference to Calvary. Grace Academy boys basketball coach John Basore insists that his team can go 10 players deep. But if it weren't for the senior duo of Zack Koontz and Jamie Heckman, depth would be the least of the Knights' problems. Grace's big men came up with another big performance - Koontz leading the way in the first half, with Heckman finishing strong - as the Knights topped Calvary Christian 68-49 in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference. Earlier in the evening, the Grace girls won their fifth straight game by beating Calvary, 42-34.

Monday, January 8, 2013 BOYS BASKETBALL Alex Cosner had 23 points and a career-high 22 rebounds to lead Heritage Academy to a 66-40 victory over Calvary Christian in Mason Dixon Christian Conference action Monday. Chris Harrell had 17 points, including two 3-pointers, nine rebounds and eight assists and Ben Cosner had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles (5-1, 4-1). Tyler Michaels had 15 points and Matt Dillow had 12 points for Calvary Christian, which was outscored 31-13 in the first half.

Bubba Kriner had three hits, including a triple, and David Fisler and Ethan Nield had three hits each for the Eagles (6-0, 6-0), who rapped out 17 hits. PREP VOLLEYBALL Callie Butts had seven service points, six aces and 18 assists to lead Heritage Academy in a 25-8, 25-15, 25-11 Mason Dixon Christian Conference sweep of Calvary Christian on Tuesday. Kara Stamper had 16 service points, 17 kills and two blocks and Jessica Gaylor had five aces and three kills for the Eagles (6-0). Grace 3, Shalom 2 CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Caitlin Cox had 21 assists, five aces, 10 service points and seven digs to lead Grace Academy to a five-game 25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 22-25, 19-17 victory over Shalom Christian.
