Performer John Brink knows right away if a song he hears will fit into his repertoire. "I've got to love it," the 50-year-old Chambersburg native says. "You've got to love it. If I don't like it in the first 35 to 40 seconds, I probably won't do it. If it hasn't grabbed me, how can I fool an audience?" Particularly in a cabaret setting, where artist and patrons can rub elbows in close quarters. After all, life is a cabaret, old chum. And on Saturday, it'll be easier to come to the cabaret as Cumberland Valley School of Music hosts its latest Musicale series performance, a cabaret in the Beistle Co. Atrium in Shippensburg, Pa. "There's a lot of neat music that goes with that, and it's something we haven't done before," says CVSM program director Paula Hepfer about choosing to stage a cabaret.

Bathed in shadow, you turn away from the rain and enter the nearest doorway. In a blink, you are surrounded by a bacchanalian underworld of debauchery, sex, booze and drugs, all keeping time to a musical beat. Life may indeed be a cabaret, old chum, but odds are you've never before settled into a stageside chair like this. Gritty, sensuous, risqu ... the play cordially invites you to join the denizens of the Kit Kat Club, as imagined on The Maryland Theatre stage for two shows Sunday night.
