WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Come October, one more thing will separate Waynesboro and Honolulu - an Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. Construction is scheduled to begin next week on the restaurant in the Rouzerville Commons shopping center, and the target opening is in October, a company spokeswoman said in an e-mail Thursday. Sixteen countries and every state except Hawaii are home to at least one of the more than 1,800 Applebee's restaurants, Vikki Watson said. "The staff for a typical restaurant consists of one general manager, one kitchen manager, two or three assistant managers and approximately 60 hourly associates," Watson said.

bobp@herald-mail.com I took another step in becoming a full-fledged adult the other day. Birthdays are scary that way. As the numbers get bigger, you get different labels - child, teenager, grownup, middle-aged, senior and then, Oh my God. Let's just say I took a small step for my demographic classification, one giant leap for my AARP card. The funny thing about birthdays, though, is they are a time to add to perspective. For some reason, you get a lot of free time on your hands ... and when that happens, the mind tends to wander.

charlestown@herald-mail.com CHARLES TOWN, W.VA. - Think the latest attraction at Charles Town Races & Slots is impressive? Stay tuned. Track owners say they plan to build a large buffet at a cost of about $7 million and probably will build another parking garage at a cost of about $25 million. The track, which has nearly 4,500 slot machines, now has a 2,500-space parking garage. The ideal situation is to have a parking space for every slot machine, so track owners are looking to create more parking.

HALFWAY - There are two ways to get Chinese food at Valley Mall. Walk through the food court and you'll hear a patter of offers for free samples at the side-by-side Chinese places. One employee, a lively character, once posed for a picture with some teenagers - but a mall security guard prohibited them from using their camera in the mall. There's a more sedate option for an inexpensive meal. Go to the JCPenney side of the mall, facing Halfway Boulevard. Rick's China Garden has its own entrance there.
