CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - For the eighth time in his career, U.S. Rep. Bud Shuster captured both nominations for the U.S. House of Representatives. On Wednesday, Shuster's Washington office said the 13-term Republican won the Democratic nomination with 60 percent of the write-in votes. Like the previous times he won both nominations, there was no name on the Democratic primary ballot. Shuster did, however, have competition for the nomination from Paul Politis, a Fulton County businessman.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - When Democratic congressional candidate Paul Politis was preparing last week for a Monday news conference, he didn't expect his campaign might be helped by a federal grand jury in Boston. On Thursday incumbent Bud Shuster's former chief of staff was indicted on federal corruption charges stemming from a probe into possible influence peddling. "I don't want to beat Ann Eppard into the ground because she hasn't been convicted of anything," Politis said Monday.

Politis planning write-in bid CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Paul Politis won't be on the Democratic ballot in the May 19 primary, but still hopes to win the nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Bud Shuster, R-Pa., in November. The McConnellsburg, Pa., businessman Friday withdrew his nominating petitions after challenges were raised to about 270 of the 1,174 signatures. On Monday he said his decision not to defend his campaign in Commonwealth Court was in part a matter of money. "I withdrew because of what I felt was an impossible situation that I was placed in by a high-powered, carefully orchestrated, big-money effort to get me off the ballot," Politis said.

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A Fulton County businessman has announced he will challenge U.S. Rep. Bud Shuster, R-Pa., in the Democratic primary. Paul Politis, 49, of McConnellsburg announced his candidacy Wednesday for the 9th District seat. "Bud Shuster uses his power and influence to primarily benefit himself and his big campaign contributors at the neglect and expense of the everyday people who gave him their trust by putting him in office," Politis said. A spokesman for Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.
