Boonsboro honored six players Thursday on Senior Night, but it was the underclassmen who starred for the Warriors. Junior Courtney Ridenour was Boonsboro's senior contributor, leading the Warriors with three goals on the way to a 7-3 victory over Brunswick. “It was an awesome win for the seniors,” Boonsboro coach Susan Funke said. “We played as a team, though. I tell them nothing is scored by themselves. Every goal is a total team effort.” Maeve Windsor - the Warriors' junior goalkeeper - gave a masterful performance between the pipes with 14 saves.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Taulton Summers, 76, of Smithsburg, Md., died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Hagerstown, Md.  She was the wife of George Wesley Summers, who died in 1982. Born in Brunswick, Md., on July 23, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Harry Mahlon and Elizabeth Catherine Spaid Taulton.  She was a member of Harmony Church of the Brethren, Myersville, Md. She is survived by four children, Martin Elwood Miller and Clark Mahlon Miller, both of Hagerstown, Debbie Selby of Frederick, Md., and Charles Summers of Springfield, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren, Gabe Miller and Emily Haydel of San Francisco, Calif., Andy Miller, Austin Miller and Chris Blackburn of Hagerstown, Kyle Miller and Garret Miller of Brunswick, Crystall Summers of Pennsylvania, Sandra Summers of Williamsport, Md., Tanjorie Godwin of Connecticut, K.C., Patsy and LeeAnn Summers of Hagerstown, and Nellie Summers of Alabama; and one brother, John Taulton and wife, Debbie, of Jefferson, Md. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, Md. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Harmony Church of the Brethren, 3921 Brethren Church Road, Myersville.

South Hagerstown's girls softball team may have been mired in a 39-game losing streak dating back to 2010, but for freshman Katelyn Mehrling, the streak was only one. After striking out 11 in a season-opening 1-0 loss to Tuscarora on Friday, Mehrling fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts on Tuesday as the Rebels made two third-inning runs stand up for a 2-1 victory over Brunswick in the MVAL Antietam opener for both teams. “We really wanted to win,” Mehrling said. “We realized we could do it (after the Tuscarora loss)

North Hagerstown's season and MVAL Antietam boys lacrosse opener against Brunswick became a showcase for the Hubs' multi-dimensional offensive attack on Tuesday night at Mike Callas Stadium. Drew Brooks scored four goals and Kyle Hewlett and Reggie Daniel each netted three as North steamed past the Railroaders, 12-5. The final score could have been an even bigger blowout. The Hubs (1-0, 1-0) took 32 shots in the first half, compared to just seven for Brunswick (0-3, 0-2). But 15 of North's shots went wide or high, and Railroaders goalie Anthony Malik made 11 saves to keep Brunswick within 6-3 at halftime.

In the end, the simplest things were the hardest for the Smithsburg boys basketball team to do. “Passing and foul shots,” said Smithsburg coach Mike Williams. “It's as elementary as you can get.” One less turnover and a couple of more foul shots would have made a world of difference for the Leopards on Tuesday in their 48-45 loss to Brunswick in the Maryland Class 1A West Region East Section final. In fact, if the Leopards just shot foul shots better - missing 10 of 20 free throws game, including a pair of 1-and-1s - it might not have come down to an all-or-nothing finish to tie the game in regulation.

The Smithsburg Leopards seemingly have put their disappointing 9-13 regular season behind them. After getting a bye in the first round, Smithsburg opened playoff action in the second round by eliminating the Boonsboro Warriors 69-58 on Thursday night in a Maryland Class 1A West Region East Section boys basketball semifinal. Smithsburg (10-13) will play at Brunswick on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the East Section championship game. The Leopards are one win away from repeating as East Section champions and two wins away from repeating as West Region champions and advancing to a second straight Maryland state tournament.

Ryan Grabill had a plan. But after 51 seconds, he was going to Plan B. And the Clear Spring boys basketball team was never able to fully recover, dropping a 59-43 decision to Brunswick in the Maryland Class 1A West Region East Section semifinal Thursday. Clear Spring opened with a box-and-one defense in an effort to shut down the Railroaders' leading scorer, Zach Hossler. But instead Collin Nusbaum torched the Blazers with a pair of 3-pointers in the first 51 seconds, forcing Grabill to call a timeout and go with a straight man-to-man defense.
