St. Joseph Catholic Church, off Virginia Avenue in Halfway, will hold its Christmas bazaar and bake sale Nov. 5 to 7. It will be held in the parish center behind the church. The hours are Thursday, Nov. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bazaar features handmade gifts, decorations, wreaths, floral arrangements, baby items, table runners, snowmen, hard candy, a "White Elephant" table of Christmas treasures and other items.

It's a few weeks before Christmas, and although you may not have visions of sugarplums dancing in your head, several of our readers have had visions of holiday cookies. They shared their recipes for Lifestyle's annual cookie exchange and told why the cookies are special to them and their families. Here are some recipes for the holiday treats. MYERSVILLE, Md. - A teen spring mixer and dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Musket Ridge Golf Club, 3555 Brethren Church Road. The mixer is open to ages 13 and older. Parents are also welcome. Cost is $25 per person, which includes dinner. Teen buffet includes mini pizzas, chicken tenders and more. Adult meal includes chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, brownies, cookies, coffee and iced tea. Deadline for reservations is Tuesday, May 4, and must be made by e-mail to capsno_1@yahoo.

Laura Oates loves to bake. The Hagerstown mom said she always makes her sons' birthday cakes from scratch complete with homemade icing. She said now that her sons , Adam, 4 and Ryan, 1, are old enough to help, she looks for fun, easy recipes to create together. Oates said she first saw this hamburger cupcake recipe on the website Bakerella.com. "When I saw it, I thought it was such a neat recipe because the kids could help me make it," Oates said. She said both of her boys enjoy baking with her, and they especially like sampling their work.

On Dec. 8, Girl Scouts from Boonsboro Troop 222 had a very special and exciting trip.Troop leader Heidi Welsh organized a dogsledding trip with Husky Power Dogsledding in Accident, Md. The weather was perfect, as newly fallen snow and a crispness in the air made this event even more special for the girls. When the girls arrived, they were thrilled to see 19 dogs. The Siberian and Alaskan huskies were awesome and beautiful. The girls loved learning all about the dogs and the sport of dogsledding.

Spring bargain sale set for March 14-15 The Women's Club will have its Spring Bargain Sale on Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the club building at 31 S. Prospect St. in Hagerstown. Gently used clothing, household merchandise, jewelry, toys, baked goods and linens will be available for purchase. Orders for vegetable beef soup and ham and bean soup at $4.50 a quart and $2.25 a pint and country ham sandwiches at $2.50 each can be called to the Women's Club office by Friday.

Bakers are invited to enter the first Cooks that Care: Dessert Bake-Off from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at The Purple Iris, 1956 Winchester Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va. Baking categories are brownies/cookies; cakes/cheesecakes/cupcakes; and pies/tarts/turnovers/cobblers. Sixty-four entries will be accepted. The entry fee per recipe is $15. For those who want to taste the desserts, the entry fee is $5 at the door. The celebrity judges will be Chef Steve Weiss of Blue Ridge Community and Technical College in Martinsburg, Chef Jay Zuspan III, owner of 28 South in Hagerstown, and Chef Eric Hott of Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in Switzerland.
