John Edward Briggs, 85, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Fahrney-Keedy Village in Boonsboro, Md., under the compassionate care of Hospice of Washington County. Born Dec. 21, 1927, in Binghamton, N.Y., he was the only child of Lillie (Shifter) and William Henry Briggs. Under the GI Bill, he received his bachelor of arts degree in English literature and library science in 1952. In 1954, he earned a master of library science degree. He worked as a proofreader for Vail-Ballou Press.

Myrtle Emma Phoenix Briggs, 94, of Sabilisville and formerly of Gaithersburg, Md., died Monday, Feb 25, 2013. The service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Green Valley in Monroveia, Md., with Pastor Michael Yoho leading the service. Burial will follow the service at Forest Oak Cemetery in Gaithersburg, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Arrangments are by Lochstampfor Funeral Home Inc., Waynesboro, Pa.

Ruth L. Briggs, 67, a resident of Manor Care Nursing Home, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at the home. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg, Pa. The service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Needmore (Pa.) Bible Church.

CHARLES TOWN, W.VA. -- "But we can help a few animals, you and I. " That is the mantra of Anna C. Briggs who, since she was 14, has championed the cause of stray and lost cats and dogs. Earlier this month, Briggs reached her 100th birthday. Her legacy, when it comes, will live on in her life's work and that of her late husband, James P. Briggs, in the National Humane Education Society and the Briggs Animal Adoption Center. Both are housed in an 8-year-old, 18,000-square-foot, Cape Cod-style building on U.S. 340 south of Charles Town.

A Hagerstown man was being held without bond after police said he tried to kill another man with a pocketknife, according to court records. Kevin Duane Walker, 51, of no known address, was charged Monday with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, and carrying a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure, according to court records.
