Michaela Brewer, 18, a senior at South Hagerstown High School, was awarded a scholarship to attend Bridgewater (Va.) College. She is the daughter of Dane and Jaclyn Brewer of Hagerstown. Brewer was awarded a McKinney ACE Scholarship worth $21,500. It is an academic scholarship. She was also awarded an additional $2,000 in grant money, Bridgewater officials said in an email. Brewer is president of the Washington County Student Council, president of her class at South High and president of the South High National Honor Society.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Andrew Routzahn of Clear Spring is among 23 Bridgewater College seniors who have been selected for inclusion in the 2012 edition of “Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” The students are cited for academic achievement, community service and leadership activities. The 2012 edition of “Who's Who” lists students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities throughout the United States and several foreign countries. The directory of outstanding students has been published since 1934.

Davies-Powell Mr. and Mrs. Peter VanDyke Davies II, of Roanoke, Va., announce the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth Martin, to Ryne Anthony Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Anthony Powell of Hagerstown. Miss Davies is a 2004 graduate of Cave Spring High School and a 2008 graduate of Bridgewater College with a Bachelor of Science in liberal studies with a concentration in elementary education. She is employed as a kindergarten teacher by Martinsville City Schools.

Marguerite Romona Bostetter Pursell passed away from pneumonia on Sept. 30, 2012, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md., at the age of 100. She was born Sept. 1, 1912, in Hagerstown, the daughter of Albert N. Bostetter and Annie Zuck Bostetter, both of Washington County. After graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1931, she spent two years at Bridgewater College in Harrisonburg, Va. She taught preschool children in Hagerstown and Washington, D.C.  On Sept.

Dr. J. Rowland Reid, 93, passed away at home Feb. 29 while getting ready for work at Peak Vista Community Health Centers, where he had volunteered for the past 22 years. He was the oldest practicing physician in Colorado Springs, Colo. Born Aug. 28, 1918, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late J. Richard and Anna Rowland Reid. He was valedictorian of the 1936 class of Clear Spring High School and graduated from Bridgewater College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Comer-Bailey Evelyn Marie Bailey and Thomas Maxwell Comer were married Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Shepherd's Spring in Sharpsburg. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Gale Swartz of Keedysville. The bridegroom is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Jennings Comer of Mount Jackson, Va. The bride is a 1998 graduate of Boonsboro High School, a 2002 graduate of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va., with a double major in art and biology. She completed postbaccalaureate studies at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2003.

HARRISONBURG, Va. - When most James Madison University students were packing up for the year and heading home, Avery Starliper of Hagerstown, a interdisciplinary liberal studies major, shifted gears from focusing on studying to focusing on others. Starliper was one of 50 JMU students who packed and loaded a bus bound for New Orleans on JMU's eighth annual Alternative May Break trip. Started in 2005 as a response to Hurricane Katrina, JMU has broadened the focus of the trip, dubbing it “AMB: Rebuilding New Orleans.” SEARCY, Ark. - The following area students were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Harding University:.

Two local students, freshmen at Bridgewater College in Virginia, were selected to attend the college's inaugural Flory Fellows Forum. The students, Hannah Garling of Williamsport and Michael J. Hull of Hagerstown, were among the participants invited to attend sessions on Bridgewater College traditions, motivational leadership, conflict resolution, goal setting and team building. Garling is the daughter of Jeff and Teresa Garling of Williamsport. Hull is the son of Steven and Arlene Hull of Hagerstown.
