Maybe you don't live by bread alone, but you probably eat some bread, and you have to know how to store it. Should you keep bread in the fridge? "The refrigerator is the worst place for bread storage," e-mailed Marda Stoliar, director of International School of Baking in Manhattan, Kan. Why? "Refrigerating bread will keep it longer by reducing the growth of molds and yeasts, however, when you refrigerate bread, the starch-glutin mixture will change its consistency, and the bread will lose its 'fresh' texture and taste.

A two-day reservation notice is required and a donation is asked per meal. For more information, call 301-790-0275. Weekly menu March 4 - 10 Wednesday - Creamy lettuce, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, sweet potato biscuit, sliced pears and milk. Thursday - Coleslaw, roast beef and gravy, whipped potatoes, whole-grain bread, apricots and milk.

Hagerstown resident Donna Wagner said she doesn't cook much now, but she used to cook all the time. Nothing fancy, she added. "Plain American food - meat and potatoes, two vegetables," she said. Wagner said she is a self-taught cook, and gathered recipes from friends. This recipe, which Wagner got from a friend, Kerby Mumma, is a little fancy. "I made this just once for the Singer Society. It's a lot of work," she said. It might take a little advanced planning to find unsliced bread, Wagner said.

Thursday - Pepper slaw, baked turkey potpie with potatoes, carrots and peas, whole-grain bread, banana and milk.
