by Kevin G. Gilbert / staff photographer enlargement UPTON, Pa. - If you don't see what you want in Stickell's General Store, chances are you don't need it. The store, at 5489 Buchanan Trail West, has been serving Upton-area residents - mostly farmers - since the 1850s. The current owner puts in plenty of hours. "I'm like the family farm. I stay in business because I'm willing to put the time in," said George F. Henneberger, who has owned of the store since 1978.

andrews@herald-mail.com Not everyone collecting money for critically injured West Virginia State Trooper Robert Elswick on Saturday knew him personally, but that hardly mattered. "We're all like a big family ...," said Travis Shroades, a lieutenant with Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Co., who was stationed on Winchester Avenue at W.Va. 45 in Martinsburg, W.Va. "When something like this happens, it's devastating. It's just a bunch of sisters and brothers. " Firefighters and ambulance squad workers - those who know what it's like to answer emergency calls - took to Berkeley County's busiest roads for about six hours Saturday.

Violet Golden and her husband, John Robert “Bob” Golden, raised their seven children in a modest home in Hancock, near an orchard and within walking distance to downtown Hancock, since Violet never drove. Their home was a gathering place for neighborhood children, who were drawn to the home for the activities Violet encouraged. There were forts made out of apple crates and softball games played in the orchard. A sizable hill behind the house was popular for sledding in the winter, and Violet opened the basement door and invited the sledders to warm up around the basement's coal furnace while she served hot chocolate.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- It wasn't pretty, but the end result will look like a perfectly executed kick through the middle of the goal posts. Junior Eric Dobratz knuckled in a field goal from 32 yards with 2:11 remaining to give Shepherd University the lead and the Rams held on for a 19-16 victory over Fairmont State in the West Virginia Conference on Saturday. Shepherd (3-0) drove from its own 34 on the Fairmont 14 and Dobratz converted the kick on fourth-and-1. The Rams sealed the win when Keon Robinson intercepted Fairmont's Logan Moore at the Fairmont 47 and returned it 31 yards.

koelble@herald-mail.com When the 'E' portion of your linescore has a greater number than your run production, it's likely the final outcome is not going to be part of a highlight reel. The Rebels scored nine runs on Thursday, a day after their pitchers walked 12 in a season-opening loss. This time, the defense took an early vacation with 12 errors to help Urbana to a 20-9 victory. "Our fielding practices have been pretty good," Rebels coach Ralph Stottlemyer said.
