Five-year-old Amanda was excited. She had received a $10 bill as a birthday gift. She begged her parents to take her to the mall so she could buy a favorite toy. Sound familiar? Parents often wonder how they can help their child learn sound money management skills at an early age. Telling them that "money doesn't grow on trees" usually doesn't sink in when they seem to want everything. Children are good at mastering the concept of "want" long before they seem to understand "cost" and "need.

"It's Never Too Early" is the slogan chosen by the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Library Development and Services for their birth-to-5 literacy campaign. Never too early, that is, to introduce children to the library and to the joy of books. Often referred to as early literacy, this early introduction focuses on fostering a healthy and joyful attitude toward books, reading and learning. The Washington County Free Library is dedicated to providing opportunities for our youngest county residents to enjoy early literacy.

waynesboro@herald-mail.com "Princess Leia, I am your father. " There was no mistaking the voice when he said those words Thursday night. Actor James Earl Jones, who gave size and soul to Darth Vader, the villain in Hollywood's "Star Wars" series, possesses perhaps the most distinctive voice in film and television. He addressed an audience of about 2,500 in Heiges Field House at Shippensburg University. The occasion was the school's annual tribute to the memory of the Rev. CHAMBERSBURG, PA. -- It will be a shop with a mission. Offering gently used books, CDs and gifts, the soon-to-be-opened Sheep's Pasture in downtown Chambersburg will funnel proceeds into various Christian ministries. And founders promise to provide materials at a good price. "Every economic range does love a bargain, but my heart saw a need for people who absolutely cannot afford it," said Janet Johnston, whose idea sparked Sheep's Pasture's creation. Donations of Christian media and gifts are being accepted at 81 N. Main St. as renovations are under way to prepare the rented space.

We are slowly purging our house, one corner at a time. Now that school is over and there's no homework or projects, we can cast off toys that no longer have appeal, clothes that no longer fit and books that we no longer read. Just as the organizational experts recommend, we're sorting our belongings into piles: throw away, give away, yard sale potentials and keep. As with most things that occur in our family, the momentum has been fueled by a deadline. Not only are we having overnight guests this week, but we've also rented a space at Saturday's Kids Stuff Yard Sale, a fundraiser for Washington County Hospital Perinatal Bereavement program and The Learning Center.

A "Dealing with Dragons" character was not awarded silver and gold, a compliment, crystal, pots and pans or pearls for sharing a loaf of bread, but those were some of the answers Battle of the Books contestants shared Saturday, to their own necklace-biting disappointment. That character actually was awarded "good teeth," an answer only two teams gave. But by the end of the morning-long competition at Eastern Elementary School, members of three teams ? two from Boonsboro Elementary School and one from Old Forge Elementary School ?
