MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The trial for a 19-year-old Hedgesville, W.Va., woman charged in the death of her infant son in August 2008 is expected to last at least three days, according to attorneys handling the case. Monica W. Boggs of 8791 Hedgesville Road was indicted in February on counts of death of a child by a parent, guardian or custodian, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and gross child neglect creating substantial risk of bodily injury. Her trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 18. Boggs' son, Skylar Trigg Boggs, died Aug. 19, 2008, as a result of blunt-force trauma.

Kearneysville woman indicted on child neglect charge CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Kearneysville, W.Va., woman has been indicted in connection with an incident last February in which an 11-month-old baby was left behind a trash container in Middleway, W.Va., according to court records. A Jefferson County grand jury this week indicted Theresa Johnson, 29, of 435 Cedar Drive, on a charge of gross neglect of a child creating substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death, according to Jefferson County Circuit Court records.

A Hagerstown man was charged with attempted second-degree murder after another man was allegedly struck intentionally with a vehicle Sunday morning in Hagerstown's West End, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The man who was hit with the vehicle, Michael Rideout, was taken to Meritus Medical Center, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. A hospital spokeswoman could not provide his condition. Brian Sweeney, 43, of 820 Lanvale St., was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, driving under the influence, driving impaired, failure to immediately stop a vehicle at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, and other traffic offenses, authorities said.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A Berkeley County man who police allege was criminally responsible for the deaths of two Ohio women in an April 2008 accident on W.Va. 9 is scheduled to be sentenced April 2. Darrell James Russ Jr., of 140 Rustic Tavern Road, entered no contest pleas Thursday to two counts of driving under the influence causing death and two counts of DUI causing bodily injury, according to Berkeley County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Gregory Jones. A third count of DUI causing bodily injury returned by a grand jury in October against Russ was dismissed, Jones said after a pretrial hearing Thursday morning.

A Martinsburg man accused of abusing a 3-month-old boy who was found in October 2010 with severe bruising and a bone fracture in his leg has accepted a plea agreement, authorities said Thursday. Derrick Lane Fillinger, 27, who appeared in Berkeley County Circuit Court for a status hearing Thursday, has agreed to plead no contest to one count of child abuse causing serious bodily injury and child abuse causing bodily injury, according to a plea offer letter that the defendant signed Thursday.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A woman accused of abuse that caused the death of her 6-month-old child in August 2008 is scheduled to be tried on three felony charges, beginning June 2. Monica W. Boggs, 19, of 8791 Hedgesville Road, Hedgesville, W.Va., was arraigned Monday by 23rd Judicial Circuit Judge Gray Silver III on counts of death of a child by a parent, guardian or custodian, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and gross child neglect creating substantial risk of bodily injury.

The circuit court trials for a Berkeley County couple accused of starving two children in their care and locking them in the basement of their home were rescheduled Monday. Karen S. Boback and her boyfriend, Jesse A. Lafferty, of 292 Labonte Drive, were indicted on felony charges of child abuse causing serious bodily injury, gross child neglect creating substantial risk of bodily injury or death and conspiracy. Boback has agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts of gross child neglect and testify against Lafferty, who is the biological father of the children.

A Bunker Hill, W.Va., man faces life in prison after a jury Wednesday found him guilty of four felony counts of child abuse resulting in bodily injury, Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely said. Nathan Allen Snyder, 29, and his wife, Christina Ann Snyder, 44, were indicted in February 2010 on multiple counts of child abuse causing bodily injury. The couple was accused of depriving the children of food, shooting them with BBs and bottle rockets, beating them with a spoon and other mistreatment.

Two Martinsburg, W.Va., residents have each been indicted on 39 felony counts by a Jefferson County grand jury in a case stemming from a burglary spree at more than a dozen homes in the county last summer. Court records show that Matthew Wayne Killian, 28, and Nikki Brady, no age available, both of 294 Connector Road, face a series of counts, including 13 each for burglary and grand larceny, 12 for conspiracy and one for daytime burglary. The pair is accused of taking thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, guns, TVs and other electronics, plus cash from the homes that were entered.
