shappell@herald-mail.com A 30-year veteran of the Hagerstown music scene was listed in critical condition at Washington County Hospital Monday evening, more than 32 hours after he was injured in a car crash near Smithsburg. Jason Chalfont, of the Hagerstown-based Rudy and the Bluefish, was on his way home from a show the band played in Virginia on Saturday. He waited to make the trip Sunday because he thought it would be safer to drive home during the day, a band mate said Monday.

A Memorial Jam for musician John Stewart "Jason" Chalfant, a member of the band Rudy and the Bluefish, will be held Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the New Del-Mar Inn and Lounge, 16715 National Pike near Huyetts. Chalfant died Saturday, Jan. 24, from injuries received in a car accident. All musicians and friends are invited to the musical tribute to Chalfant. There is no charge.

A concert at The New Delmar Inn on Sunday will honor 30-year rock 'n' roll veteran Jason Chal-fant, the Rudy & the Bluefish guitarist who died January 24, 2004, from injuries suffered in a car accident days earlier. The third annual Jason Chalfant Memorial Jam is scheduled from 3 to 10 p.m. at the venue west of Hagerstown. Rudy & the Bluefish, Flat Stanley, Van Showe and The Jackson Brothers, and members of Kix and Funny Money are among performers at the show. "Things will never be the same," said Bluefish frontman Tom Borum.

shappell@herald-mail.com Many people pay their respects to a recently deceased friend at a quiet viewing ceremony. But the surviving members of Rudy and the Bluefish and other members of the Hagerstown blues music scene paid homage to the late John "Jason" Chalfant the best way they knew how - they plugged into their amplifiers, turned up the volume and rocked. Chalfant's family, friends and fans jammed into a packed New Del-Mar Inn and Lounge on National Pike Sunday for the show.

When he was in college, Tom Borum, 62, of Hagerstown was completing an independent study on the history of rock 'n' roll when he got the chance to meet legendary blues artist B.B. King. Borum, who was about 20 years old at the time, said King offered the aspiring musician a few words of advice. “B.B. said to me, 'I don't try to play fast, but I try to put the most feeling into each note,'” Borum recalled. Borum, who fronts the local blues band Rudy & the Bluefish, took those words to heart.
