HANCOCK - Bill Sterner thought he had it all figured out. He'd go out in style. His team would win big, his offense would gain more than 300 yards on the ground and his son would rush for at least 100 yards and a few touchdowns. Then, he could hang up his whistle and retire to a life of leisure. It was the perfect plan, except for the retirement thing. That might have to wait at least a week, since his Hancock football team's 49-7 thrashing of Bishop Walsh Friday night likely propelled the Panthers into the Maryland Class 1A West regional tournament, the school's second playoff appearance and first since 1986.

It wasn't exactly planned this way, but former St. Maria Goretti star Rodney Monroe will get to coach against his former team in tonight's Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament. However, it will be in the consolation game at 6:30 p.m. as SouthLake Christian Academy, an 88-76 loser to St. Mary's Ryken on Friday, will go against the Gaels, a 63-51 loser to Bishop Walsh in Friday's nightcap. The star of the night was St. Mary's Ryken's Stan Kaya, who established an MAIT single-game scoring record with 41 points, breaking the old mark of 40 set by Anwar McQueen of St. Albans in 1993.

HANCOCK Hancock football coach John Blake says he has been around the game long enough to learn that every victory usually comes at a price. Senior tailback Jaret Trail had that lesson ingrained in him Saturday afternoon against Bishop Walsh, and it may just be a defining moment for the Hancock football team. Trail, frustrated a week ago by Williamsport, rushed 18 times for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Panthers (1-1) walloped Bishop Walsh 42-7 at Paul Imphong Field.
