It's safe to say Bishop Walsh's girls basketball team has Hancock's number. The Spartans have three wins this season. Two have come against the Panthers, including Wednesday night's 49-25 victory. “The girls are starting to learn how to play together,” said Bishop Walsh coach John Steiner, whose Spartans defeated Hancock 56-30 on Jan. 7. “I think we can beat more teams if they play like they're capable of.” Bishop Walsh showed its capability by building a 10-2 lead in the first quarter to take control of the game early.

St. Maria Goretti's boys basketball team looked much different on Saturday than the Gaels from a day before in an opening-round loss to Bishop Walsh in the 30th annual Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament. In fact, Goretti probably looked like the Gaels teams of the mid-1980s when Rodney Monroe played, as they rolled to a 75-42 victory over the SouthLake Christian Academy (N.C.) squad now coached by the former Goretti star. In the late game, Bishop Walsh became a first-time MAIT champion with a 58-51 victory over St. Mary's Ryken.

The headliner going in to the 30th Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament has to be Rodney Monroe. Who the headliner is after Saturday's championship game might be another story. Monroe, the former St. Maria Goretti great and Maryland's all-time leading scorer with 3,407 points, brings his SouthLake Christian Academy team to the Gael Center and tips off the tournament at 6:30 p.m. Friday against St. Mary's Ryken. In the nightcap, Goretti will face Bishop Walsh as the Gaels look for their first MAIT title since 2005.
