Masons to award two scholarships Masonic Lodge 197, Keedysville, will award two scholarships to graduating seniors of Boonsboro High School during an open communication called the Strawberry Festival Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Lodge will present the Masonic Charities scholarship as well as the Antietam 197 scholarship to two recipients who will be present with their parents and families. Katie Reese, who will receive the Antietam Lodge scholarship, has lived in Boonsboro her whole life with her twin sister, Kellie, and is encouraged in everything she does by her family and friends.

Members of the Keedysville Ruritan celebrated Memorial Day weekend by placing wreaths at the war monuments in the Taylor Park in Keedysville. Wreaths were placed at the World War I, World War II and the Korean and Vietnam warmemorials. A special thanks to Willowrun Landscaping, Lowe's and Norman Pollard for planting. Sharpsburg author writes Civil War book Sharpsburg author Dennis Frye will sign copies of his newly published book, “September Suspense: Lincoln's Union in Peril,” from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 15, in the Visitor Welcome Center in downtown Hagerstown.

The first day back to school is Wednesday, Aug. 22. Motorists are reminded to watch out for those little ones waiting for their buses. Movie Sunday planned at library The Clear Spring Library will show the movie “Green Lantern” (rated PG-13) Sunday at 2 p.m. Also, the Clear Spring Library holds weekly story times. Elementary story time is on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. It is 30 minutes of storytelling and activities or studying with friends. It is geared for those in kindergarten to grade five. There is also story time on Fridays at 11:30 a.m. in the children's area.

West Virginia keeps 'Promise' to its good students To the editor: On Tuesday, May 21, West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise came to Berkeley Springs High School to award the Promise Scholarship to many of the students from Morgan County. It was such a pleasure to host the governor as he presented the Promise Scholarship to each of the recipients. Many people were on hand and the event was an absolute success. The Promise Scholarship is an excellent program that is awarded to students with a 3.0 GPA and is funded by the lottery commission.

The Rural Heritage Museum invites the community to participate in a garden activity with the Master Gardeners on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike. The event will include information on growing, fertilizing and supporting brambles, which are thorny plants such as blueberry and raspberry plants. A special children's activity of making paper berry baskets and berry dying will also take place. In addition, Master Baker Bill Theriault and the bread baking guild will hold an artisan bread baking demonstration.

marlob@herald-mail.com When Rodney Stine committed his life to God, he probably never imagined he might have to swim to reach some of his subjects. "Sometimes we can't land the boat, it's just that simple," Stine said of his missionary work in the remote islands of the Philippines. Born in Pittsburgh, Stine moved to Washington County at the age of 2 and grew up in the Maugansville area. He attended Maugansville Elementary School and graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1971.

MAY 10, 1915-SEPT. 27, 2010 BIG POOL - Sarah C. Secrest Zimmerman, 95, of Big Pool, Md., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at her home. Born May 10, 1915, in Washington County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Elmer Daniel Secrest and Annie Snyder Secrest. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Frank "Cotton" Zimmerman, in 1994. They were wed in 1967. She was a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church for many years, where she sang with the choir and taught Bible school.

WASHINGTON COUNTY ryant@herald-mail.com Alvin Massey, Harry Knogle and Bruce Wibberly stood outside St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Lappans Road Wednesday as fallen trees were being reduced to dust by Antietam Tree and Landscape's wood chipper. As Antietam Tree workers repaired the damage caused by Tuesday evening's thunderstorm, Massey, the church's treasurer; Knogle, its senior warden; and Wibberly, the junior warden, tried to summarize the damage. The church was barely visible from behind the downed poplar trees.

Eight middle and high school students from Washington County Public Schools were named Youths of the Month at Tuesday's County Commissioners meeting. The high school students to receive the honor are Senior Jermaine J. Cain and Senior Elizabeth Conner, both of South Hagerstown High School, and Bethany Trail from Hancock Middle-Senior High School. The middle school students are eighth-graders Damara McDonough, Zachary M. Valko, Amanda Crowl and Hannah House, all of Clear Spring Middle School; and Mary Forsyth, an eighth-grader at Boonsboro Middle School.
