Washington County Arts Council’s March show is “Creative Community: The Collaborative Conscience,” featuring works by members of Frog Valley Artisans of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Artwork on display includes pottery, stained glass, fused glass, photography and metal sculpture. Many of the pieces involve collaborative efforts — a steel sculpture by Mark Schwenk with glass panes added by Veronica Wilson, or a fused-glass panel by Angela Matthews framed in steel by Schwenk.

War Memorial Hospital and Valley Health Wellness & Fitness Services will offer a free program, “Introduction to Mindfulness” at noon Thursday, April 12, at War Memorial Hospital. Kelly Walker, a health educator, will discuss what mindfulness is and its role in stress management.  Participants will practice some methods for cultivating nonjudgmental awareness of the mind and body to live more in the present moment. The sixth annual Berkeley Springs Fall Birding Festival will be held at various locations in and around Berkeley Springs from Friday, Sept. 20, to Sunday, Sept. 22. Most of the festival's events will be free and the public is invited. Events will include Friday and Saturday evening programs at the Ice House, bird walks and workshops during the day Saturday, and a bird walk Sunday morning. The Potomac Valley Audubon Society is the lead festival sponsor. This year's featured evening speaker will be naturalist and nature photographer Wil Hersh-berger.

The Red Cross was called to help a family whose home burned early Friday in the 200 block of Echo Lane in the South Morgan area of Berkeley Springs, a Morgan County Emergency Services dispatcher said. The fire was reported at 3:45 a.m., the dispatcher said. As of 8:50 a.m., firefighters were still at the scene. The dispatcher said the South Morgan County Vol. Fire Department was the lead agency. No one answered the phone at the firehouse.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Three children who had been missing in a wooded area south of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., were found Sunday afternoon, according to Washington County Emergency Services. The children were checked out by paramedics and released to their parents, said Assistant Fire Chief D.J. Zahnow with the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Morgan County (W.Va.) Emergency Services requested search assistance from firefighters in Clear Spring and Hancock, but the children were found before those firefighters arrived, a Washington County 911 dispatcher said.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Stephen J. Tamburo III was indicted Tuesday by a Morgan County grand jury on one count of murder and one count of concealment of a body in the death of his father, according to Morgan County Prosecutor Debra MH McLaughlin. Tamburo, 39, of Shanghai Road in Berkeley Springs, is scheduled for arraignment April 19 in Morgan County Circuit Court, McLaughlin said. Authorities said earlier that Stephen J. Tamburo Jr., also of Shanghai Road, was 62 when he went missing in December 2008.

The Clear Spring Blazers dominated the Berkeley Springs Indians from start to finish as they scored a quick 25-5, 25-10, 25-8 sweep on Tuesday night in a high school volleyball match. “I think our girls were working well together,” Clear Spring coach Sabrina LeHew said. “We were trying some new things. We were serving aggressively, which actually resulted in 10 errors. But it is hard to be mad at that, because we had 28 aces. I was happy that my girls came out with a lot of intensity and we never had a lull in the action.

Emily "June" Smith, 83, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. Born June 1, 1930, in Hancock, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Alvey Myers and Amelia Zorich Myers Jolley. She was of the Protestant faith. She was a graduate of Hancock High School and also attended Hagerstown Junior College. June had worked as a bookkeeper with Wright Motors, Wagner Chevrolet and H&R Block, all in Martinsburg.
