It was a 30-minute half inning that will stick in the minds of the North Hagerstown baseball players. A horrible start to Tuesday's Maryland Class 3A state semifinal game against Bel Air was the downfall of the Hubs under the lights at Joe Cannon Stadium. Bel Air took advantage of North's poor play from the beginning, turning it into a 5-0 lead before the Hubs came to bat on the way to a 7-5 victory. The Bobcats (19-5) will meet La Plata, which rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh in the other semifinal game for a 5-4 victory over Stephen Decatur, on Saturday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. For the Hubs, it was a second straight year of frustration in the state semifinals.

Simply put, North Hagerstown didn't play its best baseball at the end of the season. Even though they reached the Maryland state semifinals, the Hubs only managed a 5-3 record in their eight games before Tuesday's Class 3A state semifinal against Bel Air. They won their first 14 games to start the season. Meanwhile, Bel Air was riding a 10-game winning streak. Defensive problems hurt North in the latter stages of the season and were magnified in Tuesday's 7-5 loss at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, Md. The Hubs were guilty of seven errors and other mental lapses.
