SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - It is three o'clock on a Wednesday and the faint sound of a piano fills the empty corridors of Shepherd University's Creative Arts Center. Down the hall, a professor jingles his keys as he locks his office. The usual bustle of students going to and from class is gone. It is spring break. "I will see you next week," Professor Scott Beard says as he opens his office door and waves goodbye to one of his piano students. Closing the door, he sighs and sits behind his desk.

SMITHSBURG - Williamsport junior Kelly Beard fired a three-hitter with a walk and 10 strikeouts, leading the No. 5 Wildcats past Smithsburg 5-2 in an MVAL Antietam softball game Friday. Beard improved to 9-2 for Williamsport (13-2, 7-2). "Basically, I just wanted to keep them off-balance with a lot of changeups," Beard said. "I kind of kept my changeup low to make them chase it. I felt good warming up. I guess I just had a good game. " Beard helped her own cause by driving in three runs.

As each man differs, so does his preferences for growing facial hair. Members of Brothers of the Brush Inc. in Waynesboro plan to take growing beards to great lengths. As part of Waynesboro's bicentennial celebration this summer, the Brothers of the Brush has begun a beard-growing contest for its 130 members.

After Williamsport's memorable run to the Maryland Class 1A state championship last year, the Wildcats had a big target on their backs in 2008. They also had Kelly Beard, and the junior ace more than met the challenge. Behind Beard's stellar pitching -- she went 10-2 with a 1.10 ERA -- Williamsport did something it didn't do in 2007, winning the MVAL Antietam title. Beard is the 2008 Herald-Mail Washington County Softball Pitcher of the Year. "I worked really, really hard over the summer and winter, and went to Extra Innings all the time," Beard said.

Score one for the senior citizens. A 10-year-old Sussex spaniel named Stump won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Show. (Be honest. How many of you, when you first heard of the Westminster dog show, thought it was held in Maryland?) A 10-year-old dog? Isn't that like 70 in people years? This would be like Carol Channing winning Miss America. Stump. Usually, by the time a dog reaches that age, he has a couple. I watch the dog show for several reasons. One is to test my theory that the size of the handlers is inversely proportional to the size of the dog. You start in the behemoth, working-group class with the mastiffs and the Great Pyrenees, and the handlers are pretty svelte.
