WASHINGTON COUNTY Tucked in a corner, away from cases of Chinese ceramics, Battle of Antietam artifacts and Eastern European religious icons, the collection of signatures in a Boonsboro museum's visitors book bears witness to admirers near and far. "What a delightful surprise!" a Portland, Ore., visitor wrote in the Boonsborough Museum of History guest book Sunday. A steady stream of people visited the museum - which is stuffed to overflowing with Civil War memorabilia, historic letters, ancient bones and other curios from the personal collection of Doug Bast - on the second day of the third-annual Washington County Museum Ramble.

The Hancock Rotary Club is selling tickets for its annual dinner/raffle/auction April 4. Hancock auctioneer Ron Zimmerman will auction four box seats to Maryland Symphony Orchestra's "A Sparkling Season Finale" on April 23 and a Woodcraft oak wardrobe valued at $800. These items were donated by Leslie Mills of Hooks Mill and Tracey Woolford of Hancock. Also on the auction block will be a week's vacation at Myrtle Beach, courtesy of retired insurance agent Jim Crunkleton. The condo with an ocean view has a balcony, full kitchen complete with dishes, living room with TV and VCR, three bedrooms with king and double beds, three bathrooms, sheets and towels provided, pool and covered parking.

Items stolen from Fulton County home McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- Several items were stolen from a home earlier this month about one mile north of Sheepskin Hollow Road in Dublin Township, according to a press release from the Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg. Police said the theft occurred between Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 after a thief or thieves broke into the home. Among the items stolen were a set of dishes, a cigar box full of baseball cards and two Lionel model train sets, police said.

An auction to benefit West Virginia State Police Trooper R.J. Elswick, who was shot in the line of duty earlier this month, is being planned for January by members of the Hagerstown Police Department's Street Crime Unit. Already several autographed hockey pucks - including one from Mario Lemieux - have been secured, said Officer Todd Webster, who is coordinating the auction. There also will be autographed baseball cards from Derek Jeter, Robin Yount, and Roberto Alomar, and an autographed football from Doug Flutie.

By CLYDE FORD Staff Writer, Charles Town MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police on Monday charged Jessica Lynn Newell's uncle with kidnapping and murder in the 7-year-old child's death. Michael A. Newell, 39, was being held without bond Monday night at the Eastern Regional Jail. He was arrested at the 2105 Winchester Ave. home he shared with his parents and a brother. The house is a short distance from Pikeside Bowl, where Jessica Newell had gone with her parents, David and Debbie Newell, of Baker Heights, on Thursday night.
