It wasn't the life she had imagined - one that included high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and the prospect of knee replacement. As a young girl full of life, she would never have pictured herself struggling to get through the day, spending most of her time in a recliner or bed, unable to do even the simplest of chores. Although there are several variations, two types of weight-loss operations are effective, according to the National Institutes of Health. Banded gastroplasty restricts gastric volume by stapling off a section of the stomach. The front and back walls of the stomach are stapled together; a circular window is cut to allow a polypropylene band to be placed around the lower end of the pouch to keep it from stretching, according to information on the Web site of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery, www.asbs.
