katec@herald-mail.com Bill Gangloff is working on his "Ph.B. " - that's a doctorate in philosophy of barbecue. No diploma or certificate is awarded. The reward comes after you've been making it for a while and you hear somebody say, "That is good barbecue," Gangloff said. He hopes to hear those words Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Williamsport Rotary's first Barbecue Cook-off. There are professional and amateur categories. The judges know their stuff: Betty McDonald, director of food services for Canteen Corp.

The North Hagerstown Lions will sponsor a second chicken barbecue to benefit Holly Place Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Always Ron's at 29 N. Burhans Blvd. "Wow! We really sold out fast" at a fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 2. "We were really overwhelmed by the support of the people who came out to buy chicken dinners to help Holly Place," said North Hagerstown Lions Vice President Bill Cooper, who chaired the event. Holly Place is a group home on South Potomac Street in Hagerstown for low-income senior citizens, some of whom have physical or mental disabilities.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - If you aren't well-versed in both barbecue and bluegrass music, you'll have a chance to try both Saturday when food and music converge at the new Pickin' in the Panhandle: West Virginia State BBQ & Bluegrass Festival. The event at Lazy A Campground, a former farm northwest of Inwood, will feature six bluegrass bands and at least 19 barbecue vendors, said Andrea Ball, executive director for the sponsoring Martinsburg-Berkeley County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Kathy and Jay Reeder say they decided to help out with this year's Taste of the Town & Benefit Auction to raise money for REACH because it's a good cause and for good karma, the Clear Spring couple says. Owners of a catering service and Hempen Hill BBQ Bar & Grill, the latter of which is expected to open at Fountainhead Plaza by September, the couple are preparing hot smoked salmon mousse, pit-barbecued baby back ribs, pulled pork and sweet tea for the event Sunday at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center at Antietam Creek on Dual Highway.

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association’s Mega Reunion committee will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Funkstown Tavern (back room). For more information, call Sherry Itnyre at 240-675-3388. Barbecue planned The Funkstown Fire Hall will hold a barbecue Saturday, April 30, starting at 9:30 a.m. The menu includes barbecue chicken, open pit beef sandwiches, Italian sausage sandwiches and ham sandwiches. You can either purchase the dinner or just the sandwich and proceeds will go to further the cause of the volunteers.

A story on page A14 of Wednesday's Morning Herald omitted the name of one of the judges for the Williamsport Rotary barbecue cook-off Saturday. Donnie Hoffman will be one of four judges for the event. The Herald apologizes for the omission.
