There is an opportunity that exists for high schools throughout the Tri-State area in football and basketball if coaches, athletic directors and business people are willing to be involved in what I think would be a very meaningful recognition program. For 21 years in Ohio, I was involved with two scholastic clubs that had the following goal in mind: "To work for the betterment of the sport and to achieve good sportsmanship. " All-star players and coaches were honored, but the highlight of these clubs was each school selecting a student-athlete nominee.

The annual Washington County Business Awards Banquet is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center at Antietam Creek in Hagerstown. The banquet is a joint effort of the Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Commission. The Washington County Business Awards celebrate the best in local business. Nominations were gathered from hundreds of local businesses and individuals. At last year's banquet, more than 400 people witnessed the 18 finalists compete for the top awards.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - On Monday, Nov. 24, Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle will hold its holiday banquet meeting at Mrs. Gibble's Restaurant, 7325 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle. CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Cumberland Valley Relief Center will hold its annual fundraising banquet Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Kaufman Community Center, north of Greencastle, Pa., at Kaufman Station. The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum will kick off Railroad Heritage Days with its 20th anniversary banquet Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel. Memorial Recreation Center to hold banquet By KIMBERLY YAKOWSKI / Staff Writer For 22 years, the Memorial Recreation Center has been a place where children of the Jonathan Street community could go for after-school activities, tutoring programs, games and community-sponsored events. An open house and awards banquet will be held there Friday to pay tribute to the employees and volunteers who help keep the center running. The center serves about 50 children a week in the winter and 100 a week during the summer months, said Director Ruth Ann Monroe.

Banquet honors at-risk teens' work By KIMBERLY YAKOWSKI kimy@herald-mail.com With poor grades and attendance, graduation seemed an unlikely prospect for North Hagerstown High School senior Natasha Williams. With the help of the Maryland's Tomorrow program, Williams is passing her courses and is on track to walk across the stage and accept her diploma this year, said case manager Terry Brown. William's was one of more than 120 students participating in the program for troubled teenagers to be recognized for their achievements during a banquet Wednesday at the Plaza Hotel.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The outrage sparked by radio talk show host Don Imus presents an opportunity to educate the community about what is acceptable, the president of a newly formed Eastern Panhandle chapter of the world's largest African-American Greek-lettered organization said Saturday. "It's a teaching experience for us as a whole," said Carla L. Hunter, president of the Eastern Panhandle Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. It is an organization of college-educated women committed to the betterment of the community.

There was no shortage of role models at Friday night's No Smoking Youth Club banquet for family and friends at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Staff, visitors and even the keynote speaker were there to sing the praises of quitting smoking or better yet, never starting. "Smoking is probably the most preventable health problem we have," author and health educator Richard Williams said. "Diabetes, heart and lung problems are all connected to smoking. " Williams has a doctorate in health education and administration, and has taught college-level courses in nutrition and health education.
