Participants do warm-ups with the Ballet and All That Jazz dance group in the Afternoon Arts Program at Memorial Recreation Center recently. Jana Lyn Russell, 36, of Hagerstown, Md., and Edina, Minn., died Monday, March 4, 2013, peacefully at home surrounded by family. A precious child, Jana was the light of her family and many extended friends. At the age of 2, she was diagnosed with a tumor on her brain stem and bravely withstood surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Despite the challenges brought on by surviving childhood cancer, Jana was ever-present with her mother in the ballet studio, in her leotard and at the barre, reminding us all that life is to be lived fully and without regrets.

A public performance by the dancers who participated in a weekly HotSpot jazz clinic will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Martin Luther King Center. More than 40 people ranging in age from 3 to adult have been kicking up their heels for the past six weeks at the Sumans Avenue Community Center. The clinic was coordinated by Carolyn Brooks, HotSpot coordinator, and Ranelle Flurie, director of Ballet and All That Jazz, both of whom donated their time. Flurie and her students have been teaching basic stretching exercises, mixed in with dance steps.

Ballet and All That Jazz dance school held its annual spring recital this past Saturday at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown. The performance displayed the skills and talents of dance students from preschoolers to high-schoolers. Dance styles included modern, ballet and jazz. Some of the highlights of the show were the senior pieces - dance solos and duos. Each senior dancer had 180 seconds to embody their past 20,520,000 seconds of dancing as students at Ballet and All That Jazz.

BATJ Dance Recitals More than 350 dance students under direction of Ranelle W. Flurie will perform in two shows at The Maryland Theatre on Saturday, May 20. The 2 p.m. show features younger dance students ages 3 through 10 years starting with those adorable "baby ballerinas" or "Tiny Treasures. " The ballet section continues with the next age group, or "Precious Jewels," and culminates with the children's ballet "Little Gemstones. " Jazz is in the form of "Retro" with music from the '70s and '80s and tap dancers perform to the program "Urban Beats.

So cool, in fact, that they will heat up the stage at The Maryland Theatre Saturday, May 20. The group has certainly come a long way from its humble roots just over a year ago. What began as a short-range effort to get kids off the streets has blossomed into a regular dance group, said instructor Ranelle Flurie, director of Ballet and All That Jazz.
