By VANDANA SINHA Staff Writer The 300-member J&J Health and Fitness Center on Dual Highway officially closed Friday and will reopen primarily as a health food deli and bakery by Wednesday, co-owner and local nutritionist Jeanne Rhodes said. When she and her husband John found themselves working close to 14 hours a day, seven days a week for J&J Health Enterprises, the umbrella corporation that encompasses the fitness center and The Preventive Health Institute on Cleveland Avenue, they decided to downsize, Jeanne Rhodes said.

Boonsboro town officials in December honored Ol' Town Sweets owner Kathy House with the town's "Business of the Month" award. After spending 19 years working for other people as a bakery and deli manager in several local food-chain stores, House fulfilled a life-long dream in July when she opened her bakery at 7 N. Main St., she said. House's homemade potato candy is selling like hot cakes, said her mother, Joanne House.

" Recently opened, located a block from the medical center on Robinwood Drive, Safron bakery has a display case reminiscent of a Parisian shop. You will see luscious fruit tarts filled with fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi fruit slices and Mandarin orange sections finished with a glistening sweet topping; passion fruit slices layered with passion fruit mousse; almond tartlets daintily nestled in fluted white paper cups; large crunchy almond biscotti; bear claws with a center of strawberry jam; chocolate filled croissants, not made with the soft dough fund in most stores; fraisiers, the French version of strawberry shortcake, filled with strawberry mousse and iced with almond paste; Black Forest cakes with the traditional cherry on top, all baked on the premises.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A pair of new businesses in Waynesboro are serving up sweets and coffee in a town where a recent survey showed desire for bakeries and coffee shops. In a survey of 233 residents, "coffee shop" and "bakery" were reported as two of the top five businesses or services people wanted to see downtown. Zo's Chocolate Co. has opened at 34 E. Main St. Kimmie's Creations & Johnny's Java is slightly outside of downtown, at 800 S. Potomac St. Kimmie's Creations & Johnny's Java On South Potomac Street, Kim Wiesniewski describes the new coffee shop and bakery as "a cross between 'Cheers' and 'Friends' with a family atmosphere.

I, too, just want to share how well I take care of my three dogs. I'm very disrespected by some people because my husband's a hunter, and with the deer meat, it's all ground, and we prepare ground deer meat, and it is prepared with vegetables, oatmeal and rice.

Two local food establishments closed their doors Sunday, one a family-owned bakery, the other a chain restaurant. Icing Bakery & Cafe, a family-owned store in downtown Boonsboro, closed Sunday, as did a Shoney's restaurant at Hagerstown's Valley Mall. The Boonsboro bakery, which opened in May 2010, was known for its baked goods and sandwiches, including a chicken salad sandwich with cranberries and walnuts, a patron said. Lacy Barnhart, owned the store with her husband Tom Barnhart, said she and husband became the parents of twin girls last year, and the arrival of Avery and Eden was one reason for the closure.

I still get this complaint every so often, as does pretty much everyone who works here, I imagine: "You guys over at The Herald-Mail are just trying to sell newspapers. " I always tell them, "Oh no, no, no ... No. Selling newspapers is the furthest thing from our minds. Really. See, we in the newspaper industry are of the sincere opinion that the nation's landfills are in critical need of extra mass, so we are merely manufacturing the bulkiest product we can think of in order to address the shortage.

BOONSBORO -- Icing Bakery & Cafe, owned and operated by Tom and Lacy Barnhart, features a big bay window, sleek dining tables and chairs, and sunny, yellow-painted walls, making it an inviting place to relax, and enjoy a snack or lunch. The Barnharts have been hard at work since the bakery opened May 18 in Boonsboro. "We're very new. We assumed we wouldn't be that busy, but we have been. We never imagined Boonsboro would be this busy," Tom Barnhart said. Lacy Barnhart has had the most experience with the pastry arts and came up with the name for the bakery.
