Nine pairs competed on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Little Heiskell Duplicate Bridge Club. Anne Carden and David Abuhove finished first in Flight A with a 64.58-percent game. Dick and Lois Taylor were second in Flight A with 60.42 percent, and Barbara Couch and Frank Carden placed third in Flight A with 58.33 percent. Tim Smith and Leslie Lege came in fourth in Flight A with 55.56 percent, and Barbara Burkhardt and Barbara Beard were first in both Flights B and C with 50 percent. Jack and Patsy Mesner tied with Aurora and Bruce McDonough for second place in Flight B with 41.67 percent.

Nine pairs competed Friday, Feb. 15, during a meeting of the Little Heiskell Duplicate Bridge Club. Elaine Rowe and Bob Munger finished first in Flight A with a 64.58-percent game. Jean Toth and Rick Elbo were second in Flight A with 61.81 percent, and Debbie and Scott Kiser were third in Flight A and first in Flights B and C with 56.94 percent. Aurora and Bruce McDonough placed fourth in Flight A and second in Flight B with 52.78 percent. · The Little Heiskell Duplicate Bridge Club meets at 7:30 p.m. Fridays at the American Legion on Northern Avenue.

Talking heads have been waxing eloquent, or trying to sound so, about the nature and cause of violence in our society following the mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado two weeks ago. The debate fell along predictable lines. On the one hand, liberals called for more gun controls. Mayor Bloomberg of New York stuck his foot in his mouth by saying on “Piers Morgan Tonight” that the police should go on strike unless we get more gun control, suggesting that police need more protection.

Leitersburg Cinemas will donate $1 from every movie ticket sold Saturday and Sunday to help support the victims and families of the movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colo., last week. Leitersburg Cinemas also has committed to a dollar-for-dollar match of the total ticket sales over the two days. The donation will be made to Community First Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity with a history of effectively and efficiently targeting resources in Colorado to help people in need during times of crisis.    “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families who were devastated by this senseless act of violence,” Rich Daughtridge, co-owner of Leitersburg Cinemas, said in a press release.

Nine pairs competed Friday, July 31, during a meeting of the Little Heiskell Duplicate Bridge Club. Dick and Lois Taylor finished first in Flight A with a 67.36-percent game. Frank and Anne Carden were second in Flight A with 66.67 percent, and Elaine Rowe and Kathy Goss were third in Flight A with 54.17 percent. Debbie and Scott Kiser tied with Aurora and Bruce McDonough for fourth place in Flight A and first place in Flight B with 49.31 percent. Scott and Debbie were also first in Flight C. In the annual masterpoint race as of the end of July, Dick and Lois Taylor are tied for first place with 22.18 points.

Eight pairs competed Friday night, April 17, at the Little Heiskell Duplicate Bridge Club in a local charity game to benefit the Morris Frock American Legion. Bill and Madeline Davis finished first in both the A and B strata with a 64.68 percent game. Elaine Rowe and Kathy Goss were second in A with 60.71 percent, and Aurora and Bruce McDonough were third in A and second in B with 55.56 percent. Patsy and Jack Mesner were first in C with 44.44 percent. In the annual masterpoint race as of April 17, David Abuhove is first with 13.49 masterpoints.
