Hagerstown Business College kicked off this spring's commencement season Saturday morning as the Class of 2007 donned caps and gowns to collect their diplomas during a ceremony at North Hagerstown High School. This year's class includes nearly 140 graduates in the school's allied health, business, computer technology and legal divisions. The graduates ranged from young students not that far removed from their high school graduation, to grandparents seeking a career change. The commencement speakers, both of whom graduated summa cum laude on Saturday, spoke of the challenges they faced while attending HBC, and those that are ahead.

Calli Dawn Bassett and Adam Wayne Thomas were married on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Whitetail Ski Resort in Mercersburg, Pa. The bride is the daughter of Jack Donald and Una Bassett of Clear Spring. The groom is the son of Steven and Trudy Thomas of Hagerstown. The bride is a 2004 graduate of Clear Spring High School. She is pursuing a bachelor's degree at Frostburg State University. She is employed by Washington County Public Schools. The bridegroom is a 2003 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and a 2008 graduate of Frederick Community College where he received an associate degree in police science.

Katie L. Hann and Brent C. Gustaf were married on Aug. 23, 2008, in an outdoor ceremony at the Lodge at Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. The bride is the daughter of Byron and Michele Hann. She is a 2004 graduate of McConnellsburg High School and a 2008 graduate of Hagerstown Community College with an associate degree in radiology. She is employed as a radiologic technologist at Waynesboro Hospital and Parkway Surgery Center of Hagerstown. The bridegoom is the son of Joe and Donna Gustaf, and Larry and Darlene Deshong.

Kimberly Joyce Viger and Peter James Tucker were married Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Conococheague Grace Brethren Church in Greencastle, Pa. The bride is the daughter of Donna Viger of Dundalk, Md., and Steve Viger of Frederick, Md. The bridegroom is the son of James and Leona Tucker of Smithsburg. The bride is a 2006 graduate of Thomas Johnson High School. She is employed as an account specialist at Wolters Kluwer in Frederick. The bridegroom is a 1999 graduate of Smithsburg High School and a 2003 graduate of Hagerstown Community College with an associate degree in office technology.

Angela (Stull) Kendall of Greencastle, Pa., was presented the 2011 Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association Community Citation Award at HCC's honors convocation. The award confers recognition to a 15-year graduate of HCC for volunteer service to the community. Kendall graduated from HCC in 1996 with an associate degree. She is an active volunteer with her community and her church. For the past three years, she has served as a counselor at the Royal Family Kids Camps, which serves abused, abandoned and neglected children ages 7 to 11. For her church, she regularly volunteers to assist with youth group activities.

Heather Leggett and Jason Dorrier were married Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Williamsport. The bride is the daughter of Willis and Mary Ann Leggett of Hagerstown. The bridegroom is the son of Larry and Linda Dorrier of Hagerstown. The bride is a 1997 graduate of Williamsport High School. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Shippensburg University in 2001, and a master's degree in reading from Shippensburg University in 2007. She is employed as a teacher with the Maryland State Department of Education.

Army Staff Sgt. Jason C. Woods, son of James D. Woods of Kailua, Hawaii, and Jo Ann Campbell Berke of Hagerstown, has been mobilized and activated for a future deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Woods is a force protection supervisor normally assigned to the 58th Brigade Combat Team, Baltimore. Woods received an associate degree in 1998 from Essex Community College, Baltimore. Miller-Stenger Vanessa Joy Stenger and Joseph Paul Miller were married on May 24, 2008, at their home in Newville, Pa. The bride is the daughter of James and Brenda Stenger of Waynesboro, Pa. The bridegroom is the son of Fred and Linda Miller of Shippensburg, Pa. The bride is a 1998 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and a 2001 graduate of Hagerstown Community College with an associate degree in marketing management. She is employed as a circulation assistant with the Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle, Pa. The bridegroom is a 1997 graduate of Shippensburg High School and a 2002 graduate of Shippensburg University with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

The public is invited to visit the new main campus for Blue Ridge Community and Technical College Friday from from 2 p.m. to 5 pm for Friends and Family Day, the college announced Tuesday. The new campus is on W.Va. 45 past The Commons at 13650 Apple Harvest Drive. Tours of the new building will be offered throughout the day and refreshments will be provided. This is a chance to learn about new programs and the admissions process, according to a news release. Courses begin at the new location this fall.

Marine Corps Pfc. Brandon C. Bingaman, son of Cynthia A. Clipp of Keedysville, was recently selected as the distinguished graduate from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base Camp, N.C. Bingaman is a 2008 graduate of Boonsboro High School and joined the Marine Corps in August 2010. He is a 2009 graduate of Hagerstown Community College with an associate degree. Navy Seaman Recruit Alex J. Phillips, son of Kathy Phillips of Charles Town, W.Va., and Steve Phillips of Great Falls, Va., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Phillips is a 2010 graduate of Dominion High School in Sterling, Va.
