Church youth group plans breakfast The youth group of Mount Nebo United Methodist Church will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday, Nov. 20, from 7 to 11 a.m. The cost is $5 for those 12 and older, $2.50 for ages 5-11, and free for children 4 and younger. In addition to pancakes, the breakfast will include sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, juice and milk. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the youth mission projects. Mount Nebo is at 134 S. BOONSBORO - The second annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis, sponsored by the Boonsboro High School National Honor Society, will be Saturday, Nov. 15. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. The one-mile fun run starts at 9 a.m., and the 5K run and 5K walk both start at 9:15 a.m. Teams from businesses are encouraged to participate. There will be food, music and prizes. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, goodies and jingle bells for their shoes. On Saturday, Dec. 6, a similar event will be held at Alcoa Eastalco Works in Frederick, Md. Start times are the same on both days.

Three years ago, Dan Spaid struggled to walk. He made an appointment with Dr. Roberta Rothen, an orthopedic surgeon at the Center for Joint Surgery and Sports Medicine, and learned that he needed a total knee replacement. "It was bone on bone. I did things, but it hurt bad," Spaid said. Dr. Ralph Salvagno, also with the Center, performed joint replacement surgery on Spaid, 65, of Smithsburg. Spaid said the results were great. "Now I walk five miles a day," he said.

Arthritis seminars The Arthritis Foundation will present an educational seminar "Arthritis: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You" at two locations in March. Dr. Raymond Malamet of Rheumatology Consultants will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Village of Robinwood in Hagerstown. Dr. Steven Klein, also of Rheumatology Consultants will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at Western Maryland Health Systems Sacred Heart Campus in Cumberland, Md. Both sessions are free.

Liquor officials grant license to owners of La Tolteca Washington County liquor officials on Wednesday granted a liquor license to the owners of a soon-to-open Mexican restaurant at 1101 Opal Court in Hagerstown. Ernest Camarena and Antonio Contreras, co-owners of the La Tolteca restaurant chain, told the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County, known as the liquor board, that they intend to open Sunday or Monday. La Tolteca occupies the space that formerly housed Al Pomodoro Ristorante, which closed last spring.

FEB. 11, 1927-SEPT. 15, 2009 BOONSBORO - Janice R. (Moser) Irving, 82, of Boonsboro, Md., died on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at the Washington County Hospital. Born on Feb. 11, 1927, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Kieffer M. and Armatha A. (Ford) Moser. Mrs. Irving's husband of 62 years, Gerald K. Irving, preceded her in death on March 22, 2007. Janice was a member of Beaver Creek Christian Church. She was known for her fresh produce at the family roadside stand in Mapleville.

Maggie M. Wilson, 78 FEB. 26, 1930-DEC. 11, 2008 Maggie Marie Wilson, 78, of Hagerstown, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at her home. Born on Feb. 26, 1930, in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elijah E. and Addie Marie (Miller) Loveless. She worked as a homemaker and attended Paramount Brethren in Christ Church in Hagerstown. Maggie is survived by her three sons, James M. Poole Sr., Terry L. Poole Sr. and Robert E. Wilson, all of Hagerstown; four daughters, Mary V. Mowery of Hagerstown, Anna M. Cross of Williamsport, Beverly A. Reese of Williamsport and Connie S. Kemp of Delaware; a sister, Mildred M. Smith of Hagerstown; three brothers, Staton S. Loveless of Finksburg, Md., Franklin D. Loveless of Charles Town, W.Va.

FEB. 1, 1927-JULY 18, 2010 Frank R. Gerhold Sr., 83, passed on Sunday, July 18, 2010, to be with his wife, Caroline (Garret) Gerhold, in heaven for eternity. Frank was a resident of Claremont Nursing Home in Carlisle, Pa. Frank ("Dirt") Gerhold Sr. was the son of David and Maud (Della Gordon) Gerhold and was born at home in Fayetteville, Pa., on Feb. 1, 1927. He was one of 12 siblings. Frank was a lifetime member of the American Legion in West Fairview, a World War II veteran in the Naval Services and retired from the West Shore School District as its maintenance man. Surviving his passing are his four sons, Frank R. Gerhold Jr., Stephen C. Gerhold of Enola, Pa., James T. and his wife, Jane L. Gerhold, of Enola, and Thomas W. Gerhold of Duncannon, Pa.; and daughter-in-law, Maryann Cison-Gerhold.

Community activists, elected officials, City Council candidates, family and friends joined members of Women At The Table as they honored two Washington County women at the annual Life of Leadership Dinner and Celebration on April 21 at Fountain Head Country Club's Wedgewood Room. Honored were Emma Lou Davis Comstock and Carol Moller, women whose leadership in the community serves as an example for others to follow. The Life of Leadership honor is bestowed upon women who model public and community service, either as elected officials or as appointed members of boards and commissions at the municipal, county, state or national levels of government, and who are active community volunteers.
