MAY 27, 1927-AUG. 17, 2009 Arbutus Mae "Boot" Whorton, 82, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, as a guest well cared for at the Golden Living Center in Hagerstown, Md. Born May 27, 1927, in Tilghmanton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Florence and John Carter. Besides her parents, she survived the demise of three husbands, William A. Whorton Jr., Kenneth E. Kline and James F. Howell Sr. Arbutus loved all animals, and particularly found great comfort and companionship with her beloved poodle, Ralph.

Arbutus Mary Hollinger, 80, of Maugansville, passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at Williamsport Nursing Home. Born Jan. 15, 1932, in St. Ignace, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Roy Ora and Eva Ruth (Dunn) Abbe. Mrs. Hollinger was a member of Maugansville Bible Brethren Church. In addition to being a homemaker, she also had worked for the Harvest Baptist Church as a custodian, and in the bakery at Martin's food store. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy A. Perrow and husband, Robert “Bo,” of Cearfoss; a son, Donald C. Hollinger and wife, Susan, of Greencastle, Pa.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.

The following individuals have been indicted this week by a grand jury that was seated Tuesday for the February term of Berkeley County Circuit Court. An indictment merely indicates that an individual is believed to have committed the crime. Azeez B. Banire, 21, Martins Landing, Apt. 125, Martinsburg, on counts of burglary, second-degree robbery and conspiracy. Shanz J. Campbell, 28, 364 Royal Crest Drive, Martinsburg, on two counts of delivery of cocaine and one count of conspiracy to deliver cocaine.

ARBUTUS, Md. - The West End Little League 11-12 All-Stars lost their opening match against Salisbury on Saturday at the Maryland State Tournament at Arbutus Little League. No game details were available at press time. West End will face defending state champion Thurmont today at 1:30 p.m. in a losers' bracket game.

West End won the Maryland District 1 11-12 All-Star Tournament on Saturday evening by beating Valley, 15-7. West End advances to the Maryland State Tournament, starting July 22 at Arbutus Middle School south of Catonsville.

Margie Arbutus Mumma, 84, of Hagerstown, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at Julia Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown. Born May 25, 1928, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Larkin E. and Blanche Jenkins. Mrs. Mumma retired from Corning in Greencastle, Pa. She is survived by one son, Daniel G. Mumma of Hagerstown; two sisters, Franny Miller and Jane Zimmerman, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Floyd Jenkins of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Elkton defeated Arbutus 7-6 on a game-ending wild pitch, and Northern Calvert defeated East Frederick 14-4 in five innings Saturday in first-round action of the Maryland State 10-11 Little League Tournament at West End Little League. Elkton led 5-0 when Arbutus exploded for a six-run rally in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by Jalen March and a two-run single by Zachary Rouk. "I told my players to calm down, maintain focus and play our baseball," said Elkton coach Eric Gregson.
