waynesboro@herald-mail.com Barbara Zimmerman was walking to the next tent Friday morning, the first day of the three-day Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival. She was toting a bag, proof that she had already made a few purchases. "I've been coming here for 30 years," Zimmerman said. "I've seen it grow. I remember carrying my daughter in my arms. " Like many repeat patrons, Zimmerman said she has favorite crafters she sees every year. "They know me," she said.

katec@herald-mail.com "The Apple Butter Festival was really the core to tourism," says Jeanne Mozier, the "voice" of the 29-year-old Berkeley Springs, W.Va., event. That voice, which almost always is accompanied by Mozier's hearty laugh, will be audible this weekend from the bandstand in Berkeley Springs State Park in the center of town. She keeps things moving at the Saturday and Sunday festival - a variety of things, including musical performances, beard-and-mustache and hog-calling contests, a turtle race and egg toss.

At this fest, apple butter is king By DAN KULIN / Staff Writer BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The star of the annual Apple Butter Festival here takes at least six hours to prepare. Time is a main ingredient in the sweet-tasting treat that lends the festival its name. The slow-cooking apple butter spread requires between six hours and 10 hours of constant stirring over an open fire. Apparently it's worth it. "It's good. Tastes like apple, and juicy and spicy," said Lauren Cooper, 8, of Bunker Hill, W.Va.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. ? Andrew Pecora routinely takes his family's Ford Escape to the Baltimore-area car dealership where Tom Reynolds manages the service department. But it wasn't until Saturday at the 33rd annual Apple Butter Festival in Berkeley Springs ? about 100 miles from home ? that their respective, blue ribbon-winning beards finally brought them together. "My wife (Amy) recognized him right off the bat," Pecora said of Reynolds and his bushy white beard after they were recognized by judges assembled for the festival's beard and mustache contest.

By TERRY TALBERT Staff Writer SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - What do you get when you mix 175 bushels of apples, sugar, oil of cinnamon and cloves? Around 350 gallons of apple butter - and cold cash. On Saturday, members of the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Co. and community volunteers hosted the company's eighth annual Apple Butter Festival at the fire hall on a damp and chilly day. But the weather did little to deter the crowds, said fire company treasurer Denny Barron.
