Fernando Abad entered a tight game and in a short span of three batters everything went downhill for the Washington Nationals. Jeff Bianchi lofted a single off Abad that dropped just behind Washington's drawn-in infield, breaking a tie and capping a five-run sixth inning in the Milwaukee Brewers' 8-5 win over the Nationals on Sunday. “They just nicked him to death,” Washington manager Davey Johnson said of Abad's day. The left-hander was called upon to hold a 4-2 lead with runners on first and third and one out in the sixth, but gave up a pair of improbable hits and a questionable double.

WASHINGTON (AP) - On a day that had already featured a pair of marathon games elsewhere in baseball and a doubleheader the next day, the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals needed to end extra innings in a hurry. Ryan Doumit made sure they did. Doumit singled in the go-ahead run, Joe Mauer homered, doubled and singled, and the Minnesota Twins defeated the Washington Nationals 4-3 in 11 innings Saturday. “With a split doubleheader tomorrow, the last thing we need on both sides was to go deep into extra innings,” Doumit said.

At last, the Washington Nationals' lineup is starting to click. In related news, Davey Johnson's squad is closer to first place than it has been in over six weeks. Struggling as a table-setter for the Washington Nationals, Denard Span thrived Sunday as a run-producer. Span was dropped from the top spot in the order for the first time this season, and he responded with three hits in the No. 7 position, including a tiebreaking two-out RBI double in the 10th inning to help beat the Miami Marlins 5-2. The Washington Nationals acquired center fielder Denard Span for his ability to hit leadoff and play defense. Saturday against Cincinnati, it was his fielding that stole the show. Span made pair of impressive catches to halt Reds rallies, Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer and scored twice, and Dan Haren had his best start of the young season as the Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3. Span and Jayson Werth each had two hits for Washington, which has won the first three games of the four-game set. Harper's two RBIs gave him 18, a Nationals record for April.

Dan Haren had been waiting to prove he belonged in Washington's vaunted starting rotation. After winning his last two starts, Haren is feeling a little better, and that's mostly because he's not overthrowing his fastball. “I'm not going to care about velocity anymore,” he said with a smile. “I'm sick of that. It just gives me problems. I'm just going to be myself out there. Whether it's 88 or 85 (mph), I don't really care. I know I can get people out.” Haren pitched eight sharp innings, Denard Span hit a two-run double and the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 Thursday night.

Already the owner of one previous no-hitter, Liriano (10-4) walked the first batter he faced, then retired 11 in a row before another walk.
