Allegany Dental Care announced the winners of its sixth annual poster contest. Second-graders in Washington County public and private schools were invited to create a picture using the theme “There's Magic in Your Smile.” The poster contest is run in conjunction with National Children's Dental Health Month, which is in February. The goal is to promote good oral health in children and adults. Nine schools participated this year and at each school Allegany selected a first-, second-, and third-place winner.

The Washington County Arts Council has announced its April exhibits, including “A Maryland Decade by Patrick Hiatt” and “The Eye Test 2: Photographs by Benita Keller's Advanced Photography Class Hagerstown Community College.” Patrick Hiatt studied art at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and the American Academy of Art in Chicago during the 1960s. After serving in the army, he worked as an engineer and graphic illustrator. Later he enjoyed a successful career as an IT consultant which brought him to the Washington area.

Standing in front of a newly modified Hawker Beechcraft surveillance plane, U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski on Tuesday announced $43 million in federal funding recently approved by Congress devoted to outfitting two additional multirole enforcement aircraft to protect U.S. borders. Mikulski, an advocate for border patrol and protecting American jobs, told about 100 attendees inside the manufacturing facility of Sierra Nevada Corp. at Hagerstown Regional Airport that the money serves to preserve the “passport of the middle class,” helping to protect about 200 jobs in Maryland, including many of the company's 500-plus workforce locally.

Do you make cupcakes? Especially original, creative cupcakes? Enter The Herald-Mail's second annual cupcake contest, and your recipe might win first place and the $50 prize. Cupcakes will be judged on taste, appearance, originality and overall quality. Only original or adapted recipes will be accepted. Entries should be six of the same cupcakes - enough for judges to sample. All decorations must be edible. Include with the entry a copy of the cupcake recipe on an index card that also has your name, hometown, and daytime and evening phone numbers.

Washington County Public Schools has announced the five finalists for the school system's Teacher of the Year. A judging committee will complete an additional review of the five finalists, including interviews and classroom observations, leading to an announcement of the 2013-14 Washington County Teacher of the Year at the annual dinner and recognition April 17 at Fountain Head Country Club, Hagerstown. The program is sponsored by the Hagerstown/Washington County Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

It can be something previously made, and you can enter more than once. Photos will be posted on the company's website, and whoever receives the most votes will win.
