COLLEGE SOFTBALL Brittany Main went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and Emily Myers added two hits as Hagerstown Community College defeated visiting Anne Arundel 5-1 in the first game of the Hawks' doubleheader sweep Wednesday. Christina Mehaffie had two hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs to lead HCC to a 4-2 win in the second game. ARNOLD, Md. - Brian Williams scored 10 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to help Hagerstown Community College fight back from an early deficit on Wednesday for a 83-78 Maryland JuCo Conference win over Anne Arundel. Anne Arundel led by one with 30 seconds remaining, but HCC (6-2) hit a bucket and made 5 of 6 free throws to win. cont. from sports page Derek Hoffman and Paul Micheal led HCC with 15 points each. David Covington had 13 points with seven rebounds and six steals.

Becca Morgan had nine kills and three aces, while Morena Ribeiro had seven kills and 10 digs for HCC (5-4, 1-0).

After all, the Hawks spent an evening going from implosion to rebuilding to demolition in one 40-minute game. HCC fell way behind and used speed and defense to come back before pulling away for what looked like a matter-of-fact 70-59 Maryland JuCo Conference victory over Anne Arundel on Wednesday at the HCC athletic complex.

By JACK HILL III Staff Correspondent ROCKVILLE, Md. - Beth Salley scored 24 of her 31 points in the second half Saturday to lift Anne Arundel to a 64-60 upset of the top-seeded Hagerstown Junior College women's basketball team in the semifinals of the Maryland JuCo Tournament at Montgomery College. Anne Arundel (16-9) ended HJC's 15-game winning streak to move into the today's 2 p.m. championshp game against Frederick. The Cougars defeated Prince George's, 58-56, in the other semifinal.

Hagerstown Community College's effort extended past regulation in its men's soccer battle against Anne Arundel. But, unfortunately, the Pioneers used their heads to stop the Hawks. Anne Arundel's Rob Engel connected on a header from the left side of the net to score the winning goal on Wednesday in a 3-2 overtime victory over HCC in a Maryland JuCo Conference game. Alex Moore's throw-in from the right corner found Engel, who put a quick end to the game in the 99th minute for Anne Arundel (3-2-1, 2-1)

Sunday, March 11, 2012 COLLEGE SOFTBALL Hawks finish second LA PLATA, Md. - Hagerstown Community College played back-to-back-to-back games on consecutive days at the College of Southern Maryland tournament over the weekend, finishing as the tournament runner-up with a 5-1 record. The Hawks swept their three pool-play games Saturday to earn the top seed for Sunday's bracket play. They beat CCBC-Dundalk 10-1 and Southern Maryland 4-1 to reach the tournament final before running out of gas in a five-inning, 8-0 loss to Anne Arundel in the championship game.

The Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Maryland JuCo Conference tournament without having to take the court Tuesday. HCC's scheduled opponent, Anne Arundel, was unable to field a full team for the 2 p.m. game in Hagerstown, conference Sports Information and Marketing Director Kevin Carver said in a statement. HCC, the tournament's No. 3 seed, will play its quarterfinal game Thursday at 7 p.m. at Frederick Community College.

The Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team needed some inspiration to come up with the needed perspiration on Tuesday. The Hawks were lethargic for much of the first half of their 100-75 victory over Dundalk in the opening round of the Maryland JuCo tournament at the HCC athletic complex. Top-seeded HCC was allowing the 16th-seeded Lions to hang around a little too long. It all changed when HCC assistant coach Curtis Graff did his best Elgin Baylor impression and arrived fashionably late to the game.

COLLEGE BASEBALL ARNOLD, Md. -- Hagerstown Community College clinched the top seed in the Region XX Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Anne Arundel on Monday, winning the opener 7-6 and the nightcap, 10-7. In the opener, Adam Brunk had three hits and Seth Poffenberger, Justin Harris, Justin Martinez and Neil Callahan each added two hits for the Hawks (33-17). In the nightcap, John Barrett homered to increase his HCC single-season record to 14, added a double and drove in two runs.

COLLEGE BASEBALL GERMANTOWN, Md. -- Matt Greene went 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double and seven RBIs to lead Hagerstown Community College to a 12-6 win over Montgomery County-Germantown on Sunday. Taylor Sidler had two home runs and three RBIs for the Hawks (23-7), while Daniel Heatwole and John Barrett each had two hits. On Saturday, HCC swept visiting Anne Arundel (19-10) in a doubleheader, winning 3-2 in the first game and 3-1 in the second. In the first game, the Hawks broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning as Kameron Armacost scored from third base on Zach Smith's suicide squeeze.

The Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team had no answer for Lionel Williams on Monday. But then, HCC coach Earl Redden didn't think he'd need one. Williams poured in 26 points - 14 in the final 14 minutes - to spark Anne Arundel to a 79-76 Maryland JuCo upset. "I was thinking about (Kendrick Maybank)," said Redden. "He's one of the better scorers in the conference. (Williams) is the one who caught us by surprise. " Despite Williams' offense, the illness-plagued Hawks (17-5, 10-3)
