 War Memorial Hospital will offer the American Heart Association's Heartsaver First Aid with CPR & AED training course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Education Room A at the hospital, 1 Healthy Way in Berkeley Springs. This course is designed for laypersons, especially those in a workplace setting. Participants will learn general principals of first aid, what to do in a medical emergency, how to handle emergency injuries and environmental injuries as well as learn skills in CPR and how to operate an automated external defibrillator.  After successful completion of the class, individuals will be issued a participation card from the American Heart Association.

Edward H. Lough of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network was named Volunteer of the Year during the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce's 88th annual meeting Thursday night at the Four Points Sheraton. Lough has served on several Chamber committees and volunteered with groups such as the American Heart Association. He said he has done volunteer work for the past 25 years. War Memorial Hospital will offer the American Heart Association's CPR for Healthcare Providers Course from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, and Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the hospital. This course is designed for licensed healthcare providers who need to obtain or renew their CPR certification. The cost is $50. Summit Health, which owns the Waynesboro (Pa.) and Chambersburg (Pa.) hospitals, was represented by 219 participants in the American Heart Association's Mason-Dixon Heart Walk on Sunday, Sept. 23, in Greencastle, Pa. Chambersburg Hospital was awarded the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline Silver Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients that effectively improves the survival and care of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. According to the American Heart Association, every year, almost 250,000 people experience the STEMI type of heart attack.   The hospital's interventional cardiology program continues to meet and exceed the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology's national guidelines for door-to-balloon times of 90 minutes.

Hagerstown Community College will offer a basic life support class for health care providers Monday, Jan. 11, from 4 to 9 p.m., and another session on Monday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 9 p.m., in the Career Programs Building at HCC. Each class is limited to 16 students. Offered through the American Heart Association, health care providers will earn 4.75 contact hours. The class costs $55, plus a $5 registration fee.
